Chapter 14 - THE FATHER WHO BOUGHT THE LIE

Vivien did not faint.

She became very still.

“My father died in Sicily.”

Julian shook his head.

“Someone died under his name.”

The payments came from an offshore trust controlled by Enzo Rossi.

Elena and Vivien’s father.

Marco’s former father-in-law.

The man who had hated the Morettis long before Marco fell in love with Elena.

Enzo had believed Marco used his daughter.

Then Elena disappeared into protection with Noah.

Enzo believed we had killed her.

Samuel exploited that grief.

For years, Enzo funded parts of Black Crown thinking he was financing an investigation into our family.

In reality, his money helped Samuel and Paolo continue the very network that endangered Elena and Noah.

“Is he alive?” Vivien asked.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Victor answered.

“Palermo.”

Vivien closed her eyes.

“He never contacted me.”

“He thought you chose us.”

That hurt her.

I could see it.

Families love making silence look like betrayal.

Victor had already arranged a secure call.

Enzo appeared on screen an hour later.

White hair.

Heavy face.

Tears before he spoke.

“Viviana.”

She did not answer at first.

Then:

“You let me bury you.”

He broke.

What followed was not clean.

No dramatic forgiveness.

He explained.

She accused.

He apologized.

She refused to excuse him.

Good.

By the end, only one thing changed.

They agreed to speak again.

Later.

That was enough.

With Samuel’s network exposed, the forged trust page was voided.

The marriage addendum disappeared.

The corrupt security accounts were frozen.

Federal investigators took copies of the ledgers.

Marco agreed to testify about the boat attack.

Victor agreed to testify about the financial network.

And I made a decision nobody expected.

I resigned as sole executive head of Moretti Holdings.

Dominic stared.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because my father built a succession structure specifically to stop one person from owning every lever.”

I had ignored the lesson because power feels natural when everyone tells you it belongs to you.

We created an independent board for the legal businesses.

Sold several entities that existed only to preserve old influence.

Closed others.

Marco did not want my chair.

He wanted time with Noah.

Mara received permanent financial security for protecting him.

Emma received something better.

A preschool scholarship fund in her mother’s name.

Then came Saturday.

The day I was supposed to marry Vivien.

The ballroom remained decorated.

The flowers had arrived.

The musicians had been paid.

I looked at Vivien.

“So what do we do with a wedding that isn’t happening?”

She smiled.

“Feed everyone.”

So we did.

But before dinner began, Noah tugged my sleeve.

“Uncle Dante?”

“Yes?”

“Emma says there’s one more secret room.”

I looked at Emma.

She nodded very seriously.

May you like

“Bunny found it.”

And for the first time all week, I laughed before opening a forbidden door.
