CHAPTER 5: The Collapse

CHAPTER 5: The Collapse

It didn’t take long.
Reputations like theirs don’t shatter slowly.
They crack all at once.
Marvin’s phone wouldn’t stop vibrating.
Message after message.
Call after call.
Ignored.
Missed.
Too many to face.
Camryn, on the other hand, didn’t ignore anything.
She answered every call.
Every message.
Every threat.
Her voice stayed sharp.
Controlled.
But I could hear it.
The strain.
The desperation creeping in between her words.
“You’re overreacting,” she snapped into the phone.
“It’s taken out of context.”
Another pause.
“No, that’s not what happened.”
She turned away from me, lowering her voice.
But it didn’t matter.
Truth doesn’t shrink once it’s exposed.
Marvin stood by the window.
Watching nothing.
Seeing everything fall apart.
“My boss suspended me,” he said quietly.
I didn’t respond.
“There’s an investigation.”
Still, I said nothing.
Because what was there left to say?
Consequences don’t need commentary.
Camryn ended another call.
“They’re turning on us,” she said.
Not worried.
Not sad.
Angry.
“They always do,” I replied.
Her eyes snapped to me.
“You think you’ve won?”
“I think you’ve lost control.”
That hit deeper.
Because control was everything to her.
Without it…
She had nothing.
Marvin turned around.
“What do we do?”
His voice was small again.
Almost unrecognizable.
Camryn didn’t hesitate.
“We fight.”
I shook my head slowly.
“No.”
“We survive.”
She glared at me.
“You don’t get to decide that.”
“I already did.”
Silence stretched across the room.
Heavy.
Final.
Because deep down…
They knew it too.
This wasn’t damage control anymore.
This was collapse.
The courtroom was colder than I expected.
Not in temperature.
In atmosphere.
Sharp.
Unforgiving.
Final.
Camryn sat beside Marvin.
Perfect posture.
Perfect appearance.
Like nothing had touched her.
But I knew better.
People like her don’t break outwardly.
They fracture inside first.
Then shatter all at once.
My lawyer leaned toward me.
“Are you ready?”
I nodded.
“I’ve been ready for a long time.”
Marvin avoided my eyes.
That told me everything.
He wasn’t here to fight anymore.
He was here because he had no choice.
The judge entered.
And just like that…
Everything became real.
Evidence was presented.
Audio clips played.
Her voice filled the courtroom.
Cold.
Calculated.
Undeniable.
Camryn didn’t react.
Not at first.
But I saw it.
The flicker.
The moment her mask slipped.
Marvin closed his eyes.
Every word was a reminder.
Of what he allowed.
Of what he became.
Then it was my turn.
I stood.
Walked to the center.
And for the first time…
I didn’t feel afraid.
“I was told I had no control,” I said.
My voice didn’t shake.
“I was told I had no voice.”
Silence filled the room.
“But I was listening.”
I looked directly at them.
“I was documenting.”
Camryn’s jaw tightened.
Marvin looked down.
“I didn’t fight back then,” I continued.
“Because I was surviving.”
A pause.
“But I’m not surviving anymore.”
Now I was breathing differently.
Stronger.
“I’m living.”
The words settled.
Heavy.
Permanent.
And in that moment…
The outcome was already decided.
May you like
Not by the judge.
But by truth.
