Chapter 3 - The Trap Tightens

The house felt different that afternoon.
Quieter.
But not peaceful.
More like the silence before a storm breaks through glass.
Camryn had not left.
That alone told me she was planning something.
She paced the living room, making calls in hushed tones.
I didn’t need to hear the words.
I knew the pattern.
Control.
Damage control.
Narrative control.
Marvin sat on the couch, staring at the floor.
For the first time, he looked small.
Not dangerous.
Not powerful.
Just… lost.
I stood in the doorway watching them both.
“Planning something?” I asked.
Camryn ended her call immediately.
“Handling business.”
“Of course you are.”
She smiled faintly.
“You should be careful.”
“I always am.”
“You’ve made serious accusations.”
“I’ve made documented statements.”
She walked toward me slowly.
“You think the world works on truth?”
“No,” I said.
“I think it works on proof.”
That hit her.
Harder than anything else.
Because she understood exactly what that meant.
Proof beats reputation.
Every time.
Marvin finally spoke.
“What happens if she shares it?”
Camryn didn’t answer.
I did.
“Then everything changes.”
Marvin ran his hands through his hair.
“My job…”
“My friends…”
“My life…”
“Yes,” I said.
“All of it.”
He looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time.
“You’d destroy me?”
I held his gaze.
“You tried to destroy me first.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
Camryn stepped in again.
“There’s a solution,” she said.
I raised an eyebrow.
“I’m listening.”
She folded her hands.
“You delete everything.”
I laughed softly.
“No.”
“We settle this privately.”
“No.”
“You walk away.”
“No.”
Her voice hardened.
“You’re pushing too far.”
“No,” I said again.
“I’m finally standing where I should have been all along.”
Marvin stood up suddenly.
“I didn’t mean it,” he said.
His voice cracked.
“I was just—”
“Following orders?” I finished.
He looked at his mother.
Then back at me.
And didn’t deny it.
That was the most honest thing he’d done yet.
I stepped closer.
“You had a choice.”
“I know.”
“And you chose wrong.”
His shoulders dropped.
Camryn’s voice cut in sharply.
“This is ridiculous.”
“No,” I said.
“This is accountability.”
She laughed coldly.
“You think this ends with you winning?”
I smiled.
“It already has.”
Because in that moment…
May you like
They weren’t in control anymore.
I was.
