Chapter 4 - ADRIAN CAME BACK WITHOUT VANESSA

At 5:43 p.m., Adrian walked into Valecrest headquarters.
Still wearing his wedding tuxedo.
No tie.
No boutonniere.
No Vanessa.
Every person in the lobby noticed him.
He looked like the groom from a wedding nobody wanted to mention.
I was in the glass conference room when he entered.
Celeste stood immediately.
“Adrian.”
He ignored her.
His eyes found me.
“Claire.”
I felt surprisingly little.
Maybe shock has a limit.
“Sit down.”
He flinched.
I had never spoken to him that way outside work.
Then again, we were no longer at our wedding.
He sat.
Graham explained that Adrian was temporarily restricted from approving extraordinary transactions until the board completed its investigation.
Adrian did not argue.
That scared Celeste more than anger would have.
Then he placed a flash drive on the table.
“Vanessa gave me this.”
Naomi frowned.
“Why?”
“Because she wanted me to understand what Mom had done.”
Celeste snapped:
“Do not bring me into your affair.”
Adrian turned toward her.
“You brought Vanessa back into my life.”
Silence.
“You funded her company.”
No answer.
“You planned to buy my shares.”
Celeste’s face tightened.
“To protect the company from Claire.”
I almost laughed.
Adrian did.
Bitterly.
“You were protecting it from the person who refinanced it?”
“She was taking over.”
“No.”
His voice became quiet.
“I let her.”
That changed the room.
For the first time, Adrian said something true without being forced.
Then Naomi opened the flash drive.
Vanessa had copied correspondence.
Emails between herself and Celeste.
At first, they discussed Adrian emotionally.
HE NEEDS SOMEONE WHO SEES HIM AS A MAN, NOT A PROJECT.
Then business.
CLAIRE’S SIDE LETTERS MAKE HER TOO DIFFICULT TO REMOVE AFTER THE NEXT REFINANCE.
Another:
IF THE WEDDING HAPPENS BEFORE HARBOR POINT CLOSES, ADRIAN WILL NEVER CHALLENGE HER.
I stared.
My marriage itself had become part of their transaction planning.
Then Vanessa’s reply:
I CAN GET HIM TO CHOOSE.
Celeste:
MAKE SURE HE CHOOSES PUBLICLY.
My fingers went cold.
The phone call at the altar had been planned.
Not by Adrian.
By Vanessa and Celeste.
They wanted a public rupture dramatic enough that I would leave Valecrest too.
Celeste expected humiliation to push me out.
Vanessa expected Adrian’s public choice to bind him emotionally to her.
They both underestimated me.
But Adrian was still responsible.
Nobody forced him to say yes.
Nobody forced him to walk away.
I looked at him.
“Did you know they planned the call?”
“No.”
“Did you know Vanessa wanted Harbor Point?”
“Yes.”
That mattered.
“How long?”
“About two months.”
“Did you know company money funded Meridian?”
He looked down.
“Some consulting payments.”
“Seven million dollars, Adrian.”
“I didn’t know it was seven.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
He swallowed.
“Yes. I knew Valecrest was paying her.”
There.
No rescue.
No innocent fool.
Then Adrian said:
“But I didn’t know what she was building with it.”
Naomi opened another file.
The Westchester property.
Meridian planned to build a luxury wellness resort.
Projected development partner:
Valecrest Group.
Which meant Valecrest was funding Vanessa’s company so Vanessa could later hire Valecrest to build the project.
A circular arrangement that enriched her personally.
Then came the final document.
Meridian’s cap table.
Vanessa:
45 percent.
Celeste Vale Holdings:
35 percent.
Unknown investor:
20 percent.
Naomi clicked the investor name.
The room went silent.
Richard Vale Estate Trust.
Adrian’s late father’s estate.
His father’s trust had somehow been invested in Vanessa’s company without Adrian knowing.
May you like
Only one person had authority to direct that trust.
Celeste.
