Chapter 2 - VANESSA DIDN’T ASK HIM TO COME BACK FOR LOVE

Adrian reached the airport hotel at 2:18 p.m.

I know because Lucas called me from the lobby.

He had followed Adrian out of loyalty.

By the time he understood what was happening, loyalty had turned into fear.

Vanessa was upstairs in a private conference suite.

Not at a gate.

Not carrying luggage.

Not returning dramatically from another city.

She had been in town all morning.

The airport story had been theater.

“She told Adrian she landed twenty minutes ago,” Lucas whispered.

“Can you prove otherwise?”

“The hotel has her checked in since last night.”

Interesting.

The board meeting had moved to Valecrest headquarters.

I was no longer wearing my wedding dress.

Mara had driven me home long enough to change into a navy suit.

I left the dress hanging in the bridal suite.

I had no desire to destroy it.

The dress had done nothing wrong.

At headquarters, Graham opened the emergency session.

Adrian was invited by video.

He declined.

That was mistake number one.

Then Naomi presented the Meridian transfers.

$4.8 million confirmed.

But while reviewing the vendor history, her team discovered another $2.3 million in consulting payments.

Total exposure:

$7.1 million.

Meridian Strategic Partners had no public office.

Three employees on paper.

No verified work product.

And its managing member was Vanessa Hart.

Celeste went pale.

“Vanessa?”

“Yes,” Naomi said.

Celeste looked at me.

“You knew she was involved?”

“For six months.”

“You let Adrian continue seeing her?”

I almost laughed.

“I’m not his mother.”

That landed harder than I expected.

Then Graham asked why I had waited.

“Because suspicion is not evidence.”

I had tracked invoices.

Cross-checked project activity.

Reviewed disclosures I was entitled to inspect.

Then I quietly retained outside counsel.

Three weeks earlier, I discovered Meridian had placed a deposit on a development parcel in Westchester.

Purchase price:

$18 million.

The deposit?

Funded largely by Valecrest money.

“Why would Valecrest fund Vanessa’s land purchase?” one director asked.

I answered:

“That’s what we need to establish.”

My phone vibrated.

Lucas.

I stepped into the hallway.

“They’re fighting.”

“About what?”

“The transfer.”

Vanessa wanted Adrian to sign an assignment moving one of Valecrest’s pending acquisition rights into Meridian.

“What acquisition?”

“Harbor Point.”

My stomach dropped.

Harbor Point was one of Valecrest’s most valuable future projects.

A waterfront redevelopment worth potentially hundreds of millions.

Valecrest had negotiated exclusive development rights for almost two years.

I had written half the commercial structure.

“Why would Adrian assign Harbor Point?”

Lucas whispered:

“Vanessa says he promised.”

Then I heard Adrian in the background.

“You said we’d build something together.”

Vanessa replied:

“We still can.”

“Then why are you threatening me?”

Her answer was faint but clear.

“Because you always choose comfort unless somebody makes the choice painful.”

I closed my eyes.

Apparently she knew him too.

Then Adrian said:

“I left my wedding for you.”

Vanessa laughed.

Not warmly.

“You left because I asked whether you would.”

Silence.

Then:

“That was a test, Adrian.”

My throat tightened.

Vanessa had not called to reclaim the man she loved.

She had called to prove she could still control him.

And he had destroyed our wedding to pass.

Then Lucas whispered:

“She just put something on the table.”

“What?”

“A share purchase agreement.”

“Whose shares?”

Another pause.

“Adrian’s.”

Vanessa was not merely trying to take Harbor Point.

She wanted Adrian’s personal Valecrest equity too.

And according to Lucas, the buyer named in the agreement wasn’t Meridian Strategic Partners.

May you like

It was a company I had never seen before.

Celeste Vale Holdings.
