Chapter 6 - THE STORY CHLOE SOLD EVERYONE

There are sentences that end marriages.
There are sentences that destroy friendships.
And there are sentences that explain fifteen years in less than ten seconds.
I never intended to send the girls anything.
Chloe heard her own voice and stopped trying to defend herself.
Daniel sat down.
Emma stared at the floor.
My daughters moved closer together.
I realized they were holding hands.
Six sisters.
The one thing Chloe had given them without meaning to.
Each other.
The recording continued.
Marco asked Chloe why she needed fake support documents at all.
Her answer was simple.
“Because Daniel thinks a mother who abandons six kids is disgusting.”
Daniel's face changed.
Chloe had not lied to protect herself from me.
She had lied to keep the wealthy man she left us for.
On the recording, she explained her plan.
She would tell Daniel I was bitter.
Controlling.
Jealous.
She would claim I blocked every attempt at contact.
The fake letters would make the story believable.
The forged agreement would explain why support payments never appeared in public records.
Daniel would continue believing Chloe was trying to be a mother.
And Chloe would continue living the life she wanted.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Daniel stood.
“Were you ever going to tell me?”
Chloe wiped her face.
“You had children of your own. You would never have understood.”
“You're right.”
His voice was calm.
“I wouldn't have.”
For the first time, I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
He still knew Chloe was married when their affair began.
He still helped destroy my marriage.
Daniel seemed to understand that too.
He walked toward me.
“I owe you an apology.”
“This isn't the day for you and me.”
He nodded.
“Fair.”
Then he turned back to Chloe.
“Our marriage is over.”
Chloe's face collapsed.
“What?”
“I filed three weeks ago.”
The room erupted in whispers.
Chloe stared at him.
“You filed for divorce?”
“I found the secret account.”
Jessi's head snapped up.
“What secret account?”
Daniel looked at Emma.
Emma hadn't known either.
Daniel took another document from his pocket.
“I've been trying to understand why Chloe moved money into an account under her maiden name for fifteen years.”
He placed the statement on the table.
The current balance wasn't four hundred thousand dollars.
It was $1.37 million.
Then Daniel pointed to a transaction from six weeks earlier.
Chloe had withdrawn $240,000.
And the money had been used to purchase a condominium.
Not in Manhattan.
May you like
Not in Connecticut.
Three blocks from Jessi's apartment.
