Chapter 5 - MY BROTHER'S LIE

Marco had stood beside me when Chloe left.
He helped carry Sophie's crib into my new apartment.
He watched the girls when I worked weekends.
He sat in the second row at Jessi's wedding.
And now he looked like a man who wished the floor would open beneath him.
Every person in the room turned toward him.
“Marco?” I said.
He couldn't meet my eyes.
Chloe immediately spoke.
“He made his own choices.”
That told me everything.
I walked toward my brother.
“What did you do?”
Marco stood.
His hands trembled.
“Luca, I was twenty-six.”
“So?”
“I owed money.”
My chest tightened.
Fifteen years earlier, Marco's small construction company had nearly collapsed.
I remembered lending him eight hundred dollars when I barely had eight hundred myself.
He never told me how bad things really were.
“Daniel's company wasn't involved,” Marco said quickly. “Chloe came to me alone.”
Daniel looked furious.
“What did she offer you?”
“Twenty thousand dollars.”
A sound moved through the guests.
Marco swallowed.
“She wanted me to witness a document saying Luca had accepted a private support arrangement.”
“You forged my signature?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
“I don't know.”
Chloe laughed bitterly.
“Come on, Marco.”
He finally looked at her.
“You told me nobody would ever get hurt.”
Jessi's voice turned cold.
“Six children were hurt.”
Marco lowered his head.
“I know.”
I wanted to punch him.
Instead, I asked the harder question.
“Why didn't you tell me later?”
His eyes filled.
“Because every year made the truth worse.”
That sentence hurt because I understood it.
Cowardice grows interest.
The longer you owe the truth, the more expensive it becomes.
Marco reached inside his jacket.
“I kept something.”
Chloe froze.
He pulled out an old flash drive.
“When Chloe came to me, I didn't trust her. So I recorded our second meeting.”
“Why?”
“Insurance.”
Chloe moved toward him.
“Give me that.”
Marco stepped back.
“No.”
Daniel's security man brought a laptop from the venue office.
We opened the file.
Chloe appeared fifteen years younger, sitting across from Marco in a coffee shop.
Then she said:
“Once Luca signs—or thinks he signed—Daniel never has to know the truth.”
Marco asked:
“What truth?”
Chloe leaned toward him.
May you like
And the next sentence silenced the entire room.
“That I never intended to send the girls anything.”
