Chapter 3 - THE MONEY THAT NEVER REACHED US

Four hundred eighty-six thousand dollars.

I kept hearing the number even after Jessi lowered the microphone.

When Chloe left, I had sold my wedding ring to pay our electric bill.

Three months later, I worked thirteen straight days because Emily needed glasses.

When Grace broke her wrist, I put the emergency room bill on a credit card that took me three years to pay off.

There were winters when I wore the same damaged work boots because one of the girls needed a new coat more than I needed dry feet.

And all that time, money had been coming.

Just not to us.

Chloe finally exploded.

“That money was mine!”

Emma stared at her.

“No. Dad labeled every transfer.”

She held up a statement.

FOR GIRLS — SCHOOL.

Another.

CHRISTMAS — SIX CHILDREN.

Another.

MEDICAL / LUCA.

Chloe looked toward the guests as though searching for someone willing to rescue her.

Nobody moved.

Jessi quietly handed me the papers.

I didn't want them.

I wanted the fifteen years back.

“Why?” I asked.

Chloe's expression cracked.

“Daniel controlled everything. I needed something that was mine.”

“So you took it from your daughters?”

“I was going to repay it.”

“When?”

No answer.

Sophie stood near the bridesmaids.

She was fifteen now.

Almost sixteen.

The baby Chloe had left in my arms.

Her voice was soft.

“Were you ever going to come back for us?”

That question finally broke through Chloe's defenses.

She began crying.

“I thought about you every day.”

Sophie nodded slowly.

“But thinking wasn't the same as coming.”

I looked away because my youngest daughter should never have needed enough wisdom to say that.

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

A tall man in his late fifties entered with two people behind him.

Expensive suit.

Silver hair.

Face I recognized immediately from old company photographs.

Daniel Hart.

The man Chloe chose fifteen years ago.

He stopped when he saw the crate.

Then he saw Emma.

“Dad,” Emma said.

Daniel looked at Chloe.

“What is happening?”

Chloe rushed toward him.

“Daniel, Luca planned this. They're humiliating me.”

Daniel's eyes moved to the bank statements in my hand.

Then to the fake returned letters.

“What are those?”

Emma answered.

“The support money.”

Daniel went still.

“What support money?”

“The money you gave Chloe for the girls.”

His face changed.

He looked at me.

“You received nothing?”

“Not a dime.”

For several seconds, Daniel simply stared at Chloe.

Then he said something none of us expected.

“Chloe told me you cashed every check.”

He reached inside his jacket.

“I can prove it.”

He removed an old photocopy.

At the bottom was my name.

May you like

My signature.

Except I had never signed it.
