Chapter 7 - THE WEDDING TRAP

I played the recording three times before allowing myself to believe what I had heard.

My father had known about the child. He had known about the trust. And he had discussed making someone disappear.

But the recording ended before identifying the girl.

Vivien was scheduled to marry me in twelve days.

I decided to keep the wedding.

Rocco stared at me as though I'd lost my mind.

"You want to marry her?"

"I want her to believe she's winning."

"And if she tries something before then?"

"She won't get close enough to succeed."

We increased security without making it visible. Elena and Mia moved into a protected guest suite near my study. I told Elena she could leave whenever she wished, with enough money to start a new life.

She refused.

"Not until I know why my mother died," she said.

I understood.

For the first time, I saw something other than fear in her eyes. Elena had spent years surviving quietly. Now she wanted answers.

Together, we examined my mother's letters.

One mentioned a witness who had helped her prepare the trust documents. His name was Daniel Mercer, a retired accountant who had disappeared shortly after my father's death.

Rocco found him living under another name in Pennsylvania.

Before we could reach him, Vivien appeared at my door.

She wore a cream-colored dress and carried a folder.

"The wedding planner needs your signature."

I took the folder.

Inside was a new prenuptial agreement. It granted Vivien control over the family trust if I died or became incapacitated during the first five years of marriage.

I looked up.

"That's a very specific condition."

She smiled.

"Marriage requires planning."

I signed the final page with a false signature, then handed it back.

Vivien kissed me.

"You won't regret this, Lorenzo."

After she left, I opened the folder again.

A small slip of paper had been tucked beneath the agreement.

It contained a time, an address, and a sentence written in unfamiliar handwriting.

Bring the child, or Elena dies.
