Chapter 15 - THE FAMILY WE CHOSE

One year later, the Duca mansion no longer felt like a fortress.

The gates remained, but they stood open during the day. The guards had become fewer, the corridors brighter, and the old chapel had been restored in my mother's honor.

The family trust was placed under independent management, with Mia's future secured and every remaining account audited. I dismantled the operations that had made my father feared and built legitimate businesses in their place.

It cost me allies, money, and the illusion that power could solve every problem.

It also gave me something I'd never expected.

Peace.

Vivien was convicted for her role in the financial crimes and threats against Elena. Vincent and several former associates received lengthy sentences. The investigation into Adrian's death finally produced the truth his daughter deserved.

Mia visited her father's grave for the first time that spring.

She placed a yellow flower on the stone and told him about her stuffed rabbit, her favorite pancakes, and the man she still called Uncle Lorenzo.

I stood several steps away, allowing Elena to have that moment with her daughter.

When they returned, Mia ran straight into my arms.

"Can we have a family picnic tomorrow?"

I looked at Elena.

She smiled.

"If you promise not to bring any scary business meetings."

"I'll cancel every one of them."

Mia considered this.

"Even if they're important?"

"Especially if they're important."

She giggled and wrapped her arms around my neck.

That evening, Elena and I walked through the garden where my mother used to sit. I told her I didn't want to ask for a wedding date or make promises she wasn't ready to hear.

"I only want you to know that this house is yours if you want it," I said. "Not because you owe me anything. Not because I saved you. Because you deserve a home where nobody can threaten you into silence."

Elena took my hand.

"And what if I want more than a home?"

My heart stumbled.

"Then I'll spend the rest of my life earning it."

She kissed me beneath the garden lights.

Six months later, we married in the chapel, with Mia scattering rose petals down the aisle and Rocco pretending not to cry.

Before the ceremony, Mia tugged my sleeve.

"Uncle Lorenzo?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Can I call you Dad now?"

I knelt, unable to speak for a moment.

"If that's what you want, little one."

She hugged me tightly.

And as I carried her toward Elena, I finally understood the truth my mother had tried to leave me.

A family isn't defined by blood, money, or a name that makes people afraid.

It's defined by the people you choose to protect, the truth you're willing to face, and the love you refuse to abandon.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't afraid of losing my empire.

I was grateful I'd found something worth more than ruling one.
