Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT THE EMPIRE FELL

The convoy stopped at the front gates.
Vincent watched the security monitors and smiled as armed men stepped from the vehicles.
"You should have accepted Vivien's offer," he told me. "You could have lived comfortably and pretended none of this happened."
I looked at Rocco.
He nodded once.
The evidence had already been delivered to Judge Hart, who had coordinated with federal investigators. The men outside weren't Vincent's reinforcements.
They were officers serving warrants.
Vincent's smile disappeared as the first announcement echoed through the courtyard.
"Federal agents. Put your weapons down and come outside."
He lunged toward the side door.
Rocco stopped him.
For a moment, I thought Vincent would fight. Instead, he looked at me with an expression that was almost sadness.
"You were supposed to inherit everything."
"I am inheriting something," I replied. "The chance to end it."
Vincent was arrested alongside several associates. Vivien was captured at a private airfield before she could leave the country. The stolen ledgers, recordings, and financial records linked them to fraud, witness intimidation, and the conspiracy surrounding Adrian's death.
The investigation continued for months.
Some men tried to bargain. Others denied everything. But the evidence was too extensive to bury.
Judge Hart ensured that Mia's claim to the trust was protected through an independent legal guardian until she came of age. The stolen funds were recovered, and Elena received the resources she needed to build a life without fear.
I expected the arrests to bring relief.
Instead, that night, I found Elena sitting alone in the garden, watching Mia sleep through the glass doors.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
She shook her head.
"I don't know how to live without being afraid."
I sat beside her.
"You don't have to learn everything tonight."
She looked at me, her eyes shining.
"And what happens when the danger is gone, Lorenzo?"
I wanted to tell her I would always protect them.
But she deserved more than another promise from a powerful man.
So I answered honestly.
"Then I hope you'll let me learn how to be someone you can trust."

For the first time, Elena smiled without fear.
Then she reached for my hand.
