Chapter 6 - WENDY HAD CARRIED A CHILD THAT WASN’T BIOLOGICALLY HERS

Pregnancy records confirmed Wendy carried Luca.
So she was his gestational mother.
But not genetic mother.
Whose embryo had been transferred?
Victor Hale’s archived fertility file provided one name:
Rebecca Mercer Hale.
Victor’s wife.
She died from an aneurysm eight months before Luca was born.
Before death, Victor and Rebecca had created six embryos.
Two transferred unsuccessfully.
Three remained in storage.
One disappeared.
The sixth was listed as:
Transferred to gestational carrier under confidential family arrangement.
Carrier:
W.M.
Wendy Martin.
There it was.
Wendy had carried another woman’s embryo.
Did Rebecca consent?
A signed directive permitted Victor to use remaining embryos with a gestational carrier if Rebecca died, but only after counseling and with an independent carrier agreement.
Could Wendy legally be carrier?
Possibly.
Did Samuel know?
That was the bigger question.
Photograph showed all three at clinic.
Samuel Martin had apparently participated.
Why would a husband agree to his wife carrying another man’s child?
Money.
Harbor Family Trust.
Victor Hale owned valuable medical-company shares.
Samuel’s own business was failing.
Victor offered financial rescue if Wendy acted as carrier.
Then after Rebecca died and embryo transfer succeeded, everyone’s plans changed.
Victor wanted to raise Luca.
Wendy refused.
She had carried him for nine months and became attached.
Samuel also wanted to keep the baby because Victor’s financial settlement strengthened their household.
A private legal fight followed.
No public adoption.
Victor ultimately signed a guardianship-parentage settlement allowing Wendy and Samuel to raise Luca while retaining confidential beneficial assets for him.
That explained Lucas V. Mercer.
He was biologically Victor and Rebecca Hale’s son.
Gestationally Wendy’s.
Legally raised by Wendy and Samuel.
No wonder every family tree looked wrong.
Then Anthony.
How was he related to Luca?
Anthony’s biological father Calvin Reed turned out to be Rebecca Hale’s half-brother.
That made Anthony and Luca second-degree relatives through Rebecca’s family.
The DNA result fit.
Anthony was not Luca’s half-brother.
He was his biological first cousin once removed? Let's calculate: Calvin is Rebecca half-brother. Anthony is Calvin son. Luca is Rebecca son. Anthony and Luca are first cousins, expected ~12.5%, not second-degree ~25. If half-siblings of parents maybe could ~6.25. We need fit 25%. Better make Calvin Reed Rebecca's father? Then Anthony is Rebecca's paternal half-brother, making Anthony Luca's maternal half-uncle, expected ~12.5. Still not 25. Make Calvin Reed Rebecca's full brother, Anthony cousin 12.5. Not enough.
Could initial lab classify broad "close second/third degree" with 12.5. We earlier said second-degree paternal relative and maternal half sibling test 99.98—oops. Need reconcile: That half-sibling test was based assumption? DNA half-sibling probability strong can't undo. Better say Anthony and Luca share a biological father Victor? But then Wendy's story: Anthony father Calvin false. Perhaps Calvin raised him; actual father Victor Hale too. Then Anthony and Luca are paternal half-brothers, 25%. Great.
So Anthony learns his father also Victor.
Wendy had affair/relationship with Victor years earlier and conceived Anthony naturally? But we said Anthony born before marriage, father listed Samuel, then Calvin. Can revise: Calvin Reed was presumed father/guardian, but DNA now shows Victor. Wendy had relationship with Victor before marriage, had Anthony, sent him away later. Then years later she carried Victor+Rebecca embryo Luca. Thus Anthony and Luca paternal half-brothers through Victor, Wendy is Anthony genetic mother but Luca gestational only. Perfect.
New tests confirmed Anthony and Luca shared Victor as father.
Wendy was Anthony’s biological mother.
Not Luca’s.
That was why Wendy used Anthony’s sperm for Fiona:
She wanted a child carrying both Victor’s line and her own genetics.
Fiona, conceived from Anthony, was genetically Wendy’s granddaughter.
Luca, though Fiona’s legal father, was genetically her paternal half-uncle.
The structure was grotesquely complicated.
But one fact remained simple:
I had not consented.
Then Harbor Trust.
Its hereditary clause followed Matteo Martin’s direct descendants.
Neither Luca nor Anthony were Matteo’s biological descendants at all.
Samuel Martin was not their father.
So Wendy’s entire decades-long effort to keep them inside that hereditary class was based on fraud.
She had registered Luca as Samuel’s biological son.
She had registered Fiona as Luca’s biological daughter.
Two generations of false filings.
Why?
Voting control.
Wendy’s personal trust authority increased if descendants qualified.
Then North Ridge suspended her immediately pending investigation.
She lost unilateral distribution powers.
She screamed that everyone was stealing her family.
But documents told different story.
Then Luca asked:
“Am I even a Martin legally?”
Yes.
Samuel had been his legal father under the old parentage arrangement.
Name valid.
Family relationships can be legal, social, genetic and gestational simultaneously.
We did not let DNA erase lived history.
But Samuel had died six years earlier.
What did he leave?
A letter.
He knew everything.
Luca read:
I loved you.
That mattered.
Then:
I also benefited from a lie about who you were.
I should have corrected it when you became an adult.
He had not.
Why?
Wendy threatened to expose financial payments Samuel received from Victor.
Again.
Then Samuel wrote:
If Wendy ever tells you that blood decides whether you are her son, remember she chose you every day after birth.
That was generous.
Then:
If she uses blood to control your child, walk away.
Luca cried harder.
His legal father had predicted Fiona.
Then Wendy called me directly.
I answered only because Rebecca was beside me.
Wendy’s voice sounded smaller.
“You’re destroying everything.”
“No.”
“You’ve turned Luca against me.”
“No.”
“You took Fiona.”
“She is my daughter.”
“She is my blood.”
There it was.
I said:
“And you hit her.”
Silence.
Then Wendy whispered:
“I was angry because she was supposed to fix everything.”
My skin went cold.
A two-year-old had been conceived to fix a family trust problem.
Then Wendy said:
“But Fiona isn’t the only child Anthony fathered for this family.”
I stopped breathing.
“There’s another one.”
Who?
Wendy answered:
“Elena.”
Luca’s younger sister.
May you like
The woman we believed was Samuel and Wendy’s biological daughter.
Apparently she had been conceived using Anthony’s sperm too.
