Chapter 4 - WENDY’S FAMILY TREE WAS BUILT ON TWO DIFFERENT LIES

Luca took a DNA test against Anthony.
Maternal half-sibling probability:
99.98%.
They shared Wendy.
They did not share a father.
Then Luca compared with Samuel Martin’s stored medical sample from an old transplant registry through proper legal process.
Samuel was not Luca’s biological father.
Luca stared at the result for a long time.
“I’m thirty years old.”
I said nothing.
“I’ve been carrying his name my entire life.”
Still nothing.
Then:
“Who is my father?”
Anthony answered before Wendy did.
A man named Victor Hale.
Not Uncle Victor Martin.
Different Victor.
Victor Hale had been chief operating officer of Matteo Martin’s medical-supply company thirty-one years earlier.
Married.
Two daughters.
Died nine years ago.
Wendy had worked as executive assistant at the company before marrying Samuel.
Victor and Wendy had an affair.
Luca was conceived.
Samuel apparently never knew.
Then Anthony’s father?
Another man entirely.
Calvin Reed.
A musician Wendy dated briefly before Samuel.
That explained Anthony’s later surname.
She had concealed one son’s father before marriage and another son’s father during marriage.
Yet she called my toddler genetically defective.
The hypocrisy was almost too perfect.
But Rebecca warned me:
“Hypocrisy is not the legal issue. Consent is.”
Exactly.
The fertility procedure mattered more.
We confirmed through clinic records that my diagnostic appointment had included an insemination I never authorized.
How could that happen without my noticing?
The catheter placement could have resembled parts of the procedure I expected.
I had been sedated lightly because of cervical pain.
The doctor told me everything went normally.
I trusted him.
The physician:
Dr. Samuel Reeves.
Still practicing in Cincinnati.
When confronted through attorneys, his insurer took over.
He claimed he believed I had signed donor consent in another packet.
There was one.
Signature:
Jessi Martin.
Not mine.
Witness:
Wendy Martin.
My mother-in-law had signed as witness to a consent I never executed.
Luca’s name also appeared.
Was that signature genuine?
He looked at it.
“No.”
So both were falsified.
Who prepared?
Clinic administrator at the time:
Calvin Bell.
Wendy’s cousin.
Of course.
Then payment from Harbor Trust.
Wendy had used family money to arrange the conception.
Why?
The trust.
Luca’s fertility was poor.
Wendy feared he might never produce a child eligible for hereditary shares.
She wanted a child genetically related to herself and therefore to the Martin maternal line, even if not biologically Luca’s.
Anthony shared her DNA.
So Fiona would still be “family.”
Then why slap Fiona and call her defective?
Because a later trust audit changed the rules.
Six months ago, North Ridge Trust Company reviewed the old hereditary clause.
It concluded eligibility followed direct descent from Matteo Martin, not simply Wendy’s bloodline.
Anthony was not biologically related to Matteo because Samuel was not his father.
Therefore Fiona did not qualify for that narrow voting class.
Wendy’s plan had failed.
And rather than admit she had engineered Fiona’s conception without consent, she blamed the child.
I felt sick.
Then another discovery.
Luca’s biological father Victor Hale had once been secretly adopted by Matteo Martin’s sister.
Could Luca still have Martin blood through another branch?
Genealogy complicated.
DNA review showed Victor Hale was actually Matteo’s biological nephew.
So Luca remained biologically connected to Matteo through collateral line, but perhaps not direct descendant required by trust.
Wendy had spent decades manipulating a rule she barely understood.
Then Luca confronted her.
I did not attend.
He recorded through counsel-approved family meeting.
“Did you arrange Jessi’s insemination?”
Wendy denied.
He put consent form down.
She stopped.
Then:
“I was protecting your future.”
“You violated my wife.”
“I gave you a daughter.”
“You gave us a lie.”
Wendy screamed:
“You wanted a child!”
Luca answered:
“Wanting a child is not permission for you to decide how we make one.”
For the first time since the birthday banquet, I felt something inside me loosen.
He was finally saying the sentence he should have understood years earlier.
Then Wendy switched.
“If you expose this, Harbor Trust will disqualify Fiona.”
Luca laughed.
“I don’t care.”
She froze.
“You will.”
“No.”
“That money is your daughter’s future.”
“No.”
He leaned forward.
“My daughter is my future.”
That mattered.
Then Wendy threatened to remove Luca as beneficiary.
Could she?
Not alone.
North Ridge co-trustee.
And after evidence of unauthorized fertility payments, the corporate trustee initiated fiduciary review.
Wendy’s own authority was suddenly under question.
Then she said something in anger:
“If you knew what your father did to keep you in that trust, you wouldn’t be so righteous.”
Luca stopped.
“What father?”
Wendy smiled bitterly.
“Exactly.”
Then she walked out.
That night, Anthony called.
“I think I know what she meant.”
Victor Hale had not merely been Luca’s biological father.
Before he died, he secretly purchased a large interest in Harbor Family Holding Company.
And he may have left those shares to Luca under another name.
May you like
If true, Luca did not need Wendy’s trust at all.
He may have owned more of the family business than his mother had ever told him.
