Chapter 3 - LUCA HAD A BROTHER HIS MOTHER ERASED FROM THE FAMILY

“His name was Anthony.”
Luca spoke so quietly I almost missed it.
We were sitting in Rebecca’s conference room.
“You told me you were an only son.”
“I thought I was.”
“How can both be true?”
He rubbed his face.
“When I was six, I remember an older boy living with us.”
Wendy always told him Anthony was a cousin.
Then Anthony disappeared.
Whenever Luca asked, Wendy said:
“His mother finally took responsibility for him.”
Luca stopped asking.
Years later, family photographs disappeared too.
No Anthony at holidays.
No school pictures.
Nothing.
Then two years ago, Luca’s aunt Maria got drunk at Christmas and mentioned:
“your brother.”
Wendy shut her down.
Luca confronted.
His mother claimed Maria meant a stillborn baby.
He believed her.
Or chose to.
Now Rebecca pulled public records.
Anthony Martin.
Born four years before Luca.
Mother:
Wendy Martin.
Father:
Samuel Martin.
Same parents listed as Luca.
He was Luca’s full brother.
Death record?
None.
Adoption?
None.
Then where had he gone?
A juvenile guardianship record from Indiana showed Anthony Martin transferred at age eleven to maternal grandparents.
Reason sealed.
His surname later changed.
Anthony Reed.
Current age thirty-four.
Last known location:
Cleveland.
I stared.
I had lived in Cleveland for four years before meeting Luca.
Then a memory hit me.
Not romance.
Not affair.
A fertility clinic.
Three years before Fiona was born, Luca and I had spent fourteen months trying to conceive.
His initial sperm test showed severe oligospermia.
Not zero.
But low.
Our specialist recommended intrauterine insemination.
We tried twice.
Both failed.
Then a private clinic called Harbor Reproductive Center offered an experimental “family-assisted donor matching program.”
I refused donor sperm.
At least I thought I had.
Luca agreed.
We stopped treatment.
Two months later, I became pregnant naturally.
Or so we believed.
I remembered the timeline.
The month Fiona was conceived, I underwent one final procedure at Harbor Reproductive Center.
I thought it was a diagnostic saline sonogram.
The clinic told me it would check uterine lining.
Could something else have happened?
Rebecca told me not to jump.
Records first.
We requested them.
The clinic had closed eighteen months earlier.
Its assets purchased by another fertility group.
Archived files existed.
My consent form:
Diagnostic procedure only.
No insemination.
Then procedure log.
One handwritten code:
FM-DNR / A.R.
Donor?
No.
I felt cold.
The new clinic administrator found legacy abbreviation list.
FM-DNR:
Family Match - Directed Nonanonymous Relative.
A.R.
Anthony Reed.
My throat closed.
“No.”
Luca stood.
“They used my brother?”
We needed proof.
Then laboratory logs.
Cryopreserved specimen from Anthony Reed had been thawed on the same date as my procedure.
But insemination sheet was missing.
The clinic billed my insurance only for diagnostic imaging.
Someone paid cash for an additional service.
$8,400.
Payer:
Harbor Family Trust.
Wendy’s trust.
Luca nearly collapsed.
His mother had paid the fertility clinic the day Fiona may have been conceived using his brother’s sperm.
Without telling either of us.
Then we located Anthony through counsel.
He returned the call that evening.
His voice sounded guarded.
“Who is this?”
Luca said:
“My name is Luca Martin.”
Silence.
Then Anthony whispered:
“I wondered when she’d finally tell you.”
Luca’s face changed.
“Tell me what?”
“That I exist.”
They spoke for twenty minutes before we asked about the clinic.
Anthony went silent again.
“Yes.”
He had donated sperm.
Why?
Wendy contacted him four years earlier.
She said Luca and his wife were struggling to conceive.
She wanted a backup sample from a genetically related male so Luca could have a child “of the Martin line.”
Anthony refused initially.
Then Wendy offered him $120,000.
He was drowning in medical debt from his wife’s cancer treatment.
He agreed.
But:
“She told me you both knew.”
My hands started shaking.
“Did she say my name?”
“Yes.”
“She said Jessi had approved a related donor because Luca didn’t want a stranger.”
I had approved nothing.
Anthony sounded horrified.
“I swear I thought you knew.”
Then:
“Did you ever meet me?”
“No.”
Good.
At least there had been no hidden affair.
Then Luca asked:
“Why did Mom send you away?”
A long silence.
Anthony answered:
“Because Dad found out I wasn’t his biological son.”
The room went still.
What?
Wendy had concealed Anthony’s paternity.
Samuel Martin raised him until age ten.
Then private blood testing during an illness raised questions.
Wendy admitted Anthony was fathered by someone else.
Samuel sent Anthony to Wendy’s parents after vicious divorce negotiations.
Wendy remained with Samuel.
Then had Luca.
So Anthony and Luca were maternal half-brothers, not full.
That still fit genetic relationship possibilities.
Then Anthony said:
“And Luca, there’s something else.”
“What?”
“Wendy didn’t call me because she wanted to help you have a baby.”
Pause.
“She called because she already knew you weren’t Samuel Martin’s biological son either.”
Luca went completely still.
May you like
Both sons had hidden paternity.
And the woman screaming about Fiona’s “defective genetics” had spent decades hiding the genetics of her own children.
