Chapter 9 - THE PROTECTOR WHO WASN'T INNOCENT

Daniel Mercer had protected Sophia's mother for twenty-seven years.
But someone had paid him to deliver her daughter.
Dante examined the transfer records while Leo stood beside the desk.
"How much?"
"Two hundred thousand dollars."
"When?"
"Three weeks ago."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"Right before Isabella arrived."
He called Rebecca.
"Find the original payment instructions. I want to know whether Daniel accepted the money or whether someone used his account."
Rebecca hesitated.
"Dante, there's more."
"What?"
"The account receiving the money is linked to a legal trust Daniel manages for Sophia."
Dante stopped.
"So it may be legitimate."
"Possibly. But the timing is suspicious."
Dante looked toward the photograph of Sophia on his desk.
For the first time, he understood how easily appearances could destroy trust.
He had assumed Isabella needed help.
He had assumed Sophia would accept being displaced.
Now he refused to make another decision without evidence.
At the lake house, Sophia confronted Daniel.
"Did the Conti family pay you?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"Who told you that?"
"Answer me."
He sat slowly.
"Yes."
Sophia stepped back.
"Why?"
"Because I demanded reimbursement for the money Margaret spent keeping you hidden."
She stared.
"From the people who tried to kill me?"
"From a court-controlled fund established after one of their companies was investigated."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because the claim was supposed to remain sealed until your identity was verified."
Sophia's voice shook.
"Everyone keeps deciding what I'm allowed to know."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"You're right."
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
He opened his briefcase.
"Then you deserve all of it."
Inside was a thick folder.
Hospital records.
Police reports.
Photographs.
And a videotape labeled with a date twenty-seven years earlier.
Sophia frowned.
"What is that?"
"A recording Margaret made the night she took you away."
Evelyn brought an old video player from the storage room.
They connected it to the television.
The image flickered.
A younger Margaret Bennett appeared.
She held a sleeping toddler in her arms.
Sophia covered her mouth.
It was her.
Margaret looked terrified.
"If anything happens to me, this recording proves why I left."
She turned the camera toward a hospital corridor.
Two men stood beside a doorway.
One was Anthony Romano.
The other was a younger man Sophia didn't recognize.
Margaret whispered his name.
"Marcus Vale."
The man opened the door.
Inside, a woman lay unconscious in a hospital bed.
Clara Conti.
Sophia's biological mother.
Margaret's voice trembled.
"They told me Clara died tonight."
The camera moved closer.
Clara's chest rose.
She was breathing.
Margaret whispered again.
"But she's alive."
The video ended.
Sophia stood frozen.
Her biological mother hadn't died when everyone claimed.

And the final medical record in Daniel's folder contained a more recent entry.
