Chapter 5 - THE HALF-MILLION-DOLLAR LIE

Sophia didn't know Dante had discovered the truth about her childhood.

She only knew he had called fourteen times.

And she hadn't answered once.

Daniel drove her to a small lakeside house in Wisconsin.

It belonged to a woman named Evelyn Brooks, an elderly former nurse who had worked alongside Margaret Bennett.

When Sophia entered, Evelyn looked at her for a long moment.

Then she began crying.

"You have Clara's eyes."

Sophia felt a sudden ache in her chest.

"Did you know my biological mother?"

Evelyn nodded.

"She was kind. Strong. And much braver than anyone gave her credit for."

They sat at a kitchen table overlooking the lake.

Daniel placed a folder between them.

"Margaret wanted Sophia to have the truth when she was safe."

Sophia opened it.

Birth records.

Photographs.

Medical documents.

An adoption petition that had never been finalized.

Then a bank statement.

A deposit of five hundred thousand dollars.

Sophia stared.

"Isabella told Dante's family about this?"

Evelyn looked confused.

"How do you know about the payment?"

"Daniel mentioned an old settlement."

Evelyn's expression darkened.

"It wasn't a settlement."

"What was it?"

"Money Anthony Romano gave Margaret to keep you alive."

Sophia looked up.

"Anthony Romano helped her?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Your biological father was Anthony's business partner. When the Conti family threatened you, he tried to intervene."

"Who was my father?"

Daniel exchanged a glance with Evelyn.

Then he answered.

"Michael Conti."

Sophia frowned.

"The same family name?"

"Michael was Clara's husband. He'd taken her surname to qualify for the trust's succession terms. His original name was Michael Hayes."

Sophia looked at a photograph of a handsome young man holding a baby.

"Is he alive?"

Evelyn's eyes filled.

"He disappeared the night your mother died."

Sophia touched the photograph.

Another person she'd never been allowed to know.

"Why didn't Margaret tell me?"

"Because she feared the people who were still searching."

Daniel turned to the next document.

A letter from Anthony Romano.

It contained a promise to protect Sophia until she was old enough to claim her inheritance.

Sophia read the final sentence twice.

I have arranged for the child to be kept away from my sons until the danger has passed.

She looked up.

"Dante's father knew me?"

Daniel nodded.

"He knew exactly who you were."

Sophia thought of the eleven months she'd spent inside the Romano estate.

The strange way Dante's housekeeper had sometimes looked at her.

The locked records room.

The expensive bedroom.

The feeling that someone had been watching her before she ever submitted her job application.

Her voice became quiet.

"Did Dante know?"

Daniel hesitated.

"We don't believe so."

Then Evelyn opened a second folder.

Inside was a photograph taken only eighteen months earlier.

Dante stood beside a lawyer outside a courthouse.

The lawyer held a file.

Across the front was printed:

SOPHIA CONTI — VERIFIED SURVIVOR.

Sophia stared at Dante's face.

And wondered whether the man she'd loved had known her real identity all along.
