Chapter 1 - THE KEY ON THE PILLOW

Sophia Bennett didn't cry when Dante Romano gave her bedroom to his former lover.

She simply folded the last towel, placed it on the shelf, and looked at the man she had spent eleven months learning to love.

"Of course, Mr. Romano."

Dante's expression shifted.

He hadn't heard her call him that in months.

"Sophia, it's only one night."

"Yes, sir."

Isabella Conti stood behind him, wearing a satisfied smile she didn't bother to hide.

Sophia walked past them toward the west corridor.

Her bedroom door stood open.

Inside were the books she had collected, the small photographs of her mother, the blue quilt she'd purchased with her first paycheck, and the little ceramic bird Dante had brought back from New York after learning that her mother used to collect them.

She looked around carefully.

Eleven months of memories.

Eleven months of hoping.

And apparently, eleven months of misunderstanding.

At 9:43 that evening, Sophia began packing.

She owned two suitcases and one canvas bag.

Everything fit.

The photographs came first.

Then her mother's letters.

Then the clothes.

She left the expensive dresses Dante had bought her hanging in the closet.

She left the jewelry.

She even left the ceramic bird.

At 11:16, she heard footsteps.

Dante knocked once.

"Sophia?"

She closed the suitcase and opened the door only halfway.

"Yes?"

"Isabella's settled. I wanted to make sure you're comfortable in the blue suite."

Sophia looked at him.

"Everything's fine."

He noticed the empty bookshelf behind her.

"Are you rearranging?"

"Something like that."

His phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

"Business. I'll see you in the morning."

Sophia nodded.

"Good night, Dante."

Something in her voice made him hesitate.

But he answered the call and walked away.

At 4:38 a.m., Sophia carried her belongings through the servants' entrance.

Mrs. Elena Russo, the elderly housekeeper, waited beside the kitchen.

"Sweetheart, where are you going?"

Sophia hugged her.

"Somewhere I belong."

Elena's eyes filled.

"Does he know?"

"He made his choice."

Sophia placed her bedroom key in Elena's hand.

"Please put this on the pillow after Isabella falls asleep."

Elena held her tightly.

Then she whispered something Sophia would never forget.

"Your mother once left this house the same way."

Sophia pulled back.

"What?"

Elena looked toward the dark corridor.

"Twenty-seven years ago. With one suitcase."

Sophia stared.

"My mother worked here?"

Elena's face drained of color.

Before she could answer, headlights swept across the kitchen windows.

A black sedan stopped outside the service gate.

The driver stepped out.

And when Sophia saw his face, she nearly dropped her bag.

It was the man from the only photograph her mother had ever hidden.
