Chapter 8 - THE FAMILY THAT KEPT DEREK’S SECRET LOST THE RIGHT TO CALL IT LOVE

Patricia did not see Emily for three months.

Not punishment.

Boundary.

I needed time.

She wrote:

I understand.

No guilt.

Then Allen disappeared again to Arizona.

Fine.

Derek confronted both parents.

For once, not me doing it.

He told Patricia:

“You helped me lie.”

She answered:

“I thought I was helping you keep your marriage.”

His response:

“You helped me destroy it.”

Good.

Then:

“Why did infertility matter so much?”

Patricia said Allen’s family valued biological sons.

Derek grew up hearing:

“Mitchell men continue the line.”

After Allen’s cancer, fertility became family shame.

Derek internalized.

When his own fertility problem surfaced, he panicked.

Rather than use anonymous donor with honest counseling, he chose father.

Keep “Mitchell blood.”

So Emily became genetically Mitchell.

He remained legal father.

In his mind, problem solved.

Except consent.

Then I asked Derek in co-parenting therapy:

“If you could go back, would you use donor sperm?”

“Yes.”

“Your father’s?”

“No.”

“Would you tell me?”

“Yes.”

I believed he now understood.

Too late.

Then Patricia eventually reentered with supervised visits? She had never been unsafe physically. But trust issue. We started short visits with me present.

She apologized to Emily symbolically though child too young.

Mostly apologized to me.

No excuses.

I accepted apology, not secrecy.

Then legal divorce final.

Derek’s hidden business value included in settlement.

No revenge windfall.

Fair.

He kept house.

I kept townhouse.

Retirement divided under law.

Child support based on actual income including consulting history, then adjusted when new job stable.

Then Derek made unusual request.

He wanted Emily’s surname hyphenated with mine.

Why?

“I don’t want her identity to depend only on me.”

I said no immediate need.

Birth certificate already Mitchell.

Could revisit when older.

He accepted.

Then Michael Cole.

The man initially thought donor.

He asked clinic to confirm destruction of unauthorized records.

Vanessa ended friendship with Derek.

Buckeye stake sale closed.

She sent me a letter:

I should have told you about the hidden business when I realized you didn’t know.

That was true.

She did not owe marriage loyalty but did owe ethical awareness once she knew shared marital funds involved.

I appreciated.

Then she told me another thing.

Before Derek chose Allen’s sample, he asked Vanessa whether Michael would ever donate again.

She said no.

Then Derek asked:

“What about your father?”

Why?

Vanessa thought joke.

Derek was surveying male donors he admired.

That was disturbing.

He treated genetics like a catalog.

Then therapy helped frame.

He wanted child reflecting status, health, masculinity.

Not random.

That was eugenic thinking at small family scale.

He needed confront.

Then one year later, Emily developed into fearless toddler.

She loved blueberries.

Hated socks.

Called Rachel “Ray-Ray.”

Called Derek “Daddy.”

That was emotionally true.

Biology did not erase parenting.

Then one evening after drop-off, Derek said:

“I know someday we’ll have to tell her.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Together, with professional guidance.”

He nodded.

Then:

“Will you tell her I lied?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

He closed eyes.

Then:

“Okay.”

Accountability.

Then a package arrived from Northstar’s bankruptcy administrator.

Clinic had closed after lawsuits.

Patient files transferred.

Inside my file was an audio recording.

Consent consultations sometimes recorded.

One from before embryo transfer.

Dr. Lane.

Derek.

And a third person.

Woman.

Voice familiar.

Patricia?

No.

Rachel.

My sister.

Impossible.

Audio:

RACHEL:

Anna cannot know this until after pregnancy is established.

My body went cold.

Derek:

She’ll never agree.

Rachel:

She wants a child.

Lane:

I need recipient consent.

Rachel:

Then use existing authorization.

No.

I stopped playback.

My sister—the woman who drove me away from Derek—had been inside the fertility planning meeting.

I called Rachel.

She went silent.

Then:

“Anna, I can explain.”

Every lie begins there.

“What were you doing at Northstar?”

She started crying.

“Derek called me.”

Why?

Because he thought I might accept donor conception if my sister helped persuade me.

Rachel initially refused.

Then Derek told her I was devastated every month pregnancy test negative.

He said his infertility was severe.

He asked her to help.

Did she know donor was Allen?

“At first, no.”

When?

“Later.”

My throat tightened.

“Before transfer?”

“Yes.”

“Did you approve?”

“No.”

The audio sounded like she was helping conceal.

She explained:

She was arguing that clinic should use my prior generic consent to fertility treatment, not donor sperm specifically.

She believed Derek would tell me after embryo transfer but before implantation? No, transfer is implantation stage. Timeline confusing.

Then she admitted:

“I thought once you were pregnant, you’d be happy.”

Same sentence.

Different person.

My sister had participated in taking choice away.

Why then help me leave?

Guilt.

For years? Pregnancy only months.

When Derek started controlling more, she realized what she had helped reinforce.

She urged me leave partly because she knew fertility secret and feared telling would destroy me during pregnancy.

So she waited.

Again protection through silence.

I hung up.

The gray Honda.

Her open arms.

Her promise.

Still real.

But incomplete.

I had left one controlling system and stepped into help from someone carrying another secret about my body.

I stopped speaking to Rachel.

For months.

Then I listened to full recording with counsel.

Rachel eventually said:

“No. Stop. Anna has to know whose sperm.”

Dr. Lane:

Derek says he will tell her.

Rachel:

Then do not proceed until he does.

That mattered.

She had not approved concealment.

She objected at end.

But she had entered conversation behind my back and delayed telling me afterward.

Complicity less than Derek, but real.

Then Derek admitted:

“I told Rachel I told you.”

Of course.

He manipulated her too.

Still, Rachel later suspected lie and stayed silent.

Then one last line in recording.

Dr. Lane:

If Anna refuses Allen, there is another directed donor Derek requested.

Rachel:

Who?

Derek:

Her father.

My father.

Dead twelve years.

No stored sperm that I knew.

Yet Derek apparently believed there was.

How?

Because my father had donated sperm decades earlier at a university fertility program.

And someone had told Derek.

Who?

Rachel.

My own sister had revealed that our father once donated genetic material.

Derek had considered using my father’s sperm to conceive my child.

May you like

That would have made Emily biologically my half-sister as well as my daughter.

The depth of his obsession with “known family genetics” was worse than I had understood.
