Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

My water broke at 2:17 a.m.
I woke Elena with one sentence.
“I think it's time.”
She drove like a woman being chased.
At the hospital, nurses rushed me into a delivery room.
Owen and Lily stayed with my father, who had flown in from Ohio the previous week.
Grant tried to come.
The protective order stopped him.
He called fourteen times.
I didn't answer.
At 6:43 a.m., my daughter was born.
Healthy.
Loud.
Perfect.
I held her against my chest and cried.
Not because I was afraid.
Because she was here.
Elena entered the room a few hours later.
She smiled.
“She has a name?”
I looked down.
“Claire.”
Then Elena's smile disappeared.
“There is something you need to know.”
“What?”
“Grant's attorney filed another emergency motion.”
My exhaustion vanished.
“Already?”
“He claims the birth proves you are medically compromised.”
I almost laughed.
“Seriously?”
“Yes.”
“Then let him.”
Elena stared at me.
“You're sure?”
I nodded.
“Let him file.”
Because she didn't know what I had just remembered.
Grant had sent me an email three weeks earlier.
A casual message.
One line.
Make sure the baby is healthy. I don't want complications.
At the time, I thought it was cold.
Now I understood.
He had been anticipating the birth.
And that email had been preserved.
Elena immediately requested the court's permission to submit it.
The hearing happened two days later.
Grant entered with his attorney.
He looked exhausted.
I walked in carrying Claire.
Owen and Lily sat beside my father.
The judge reviewed the medical evidence.
Then the email.
Then the forged records.
Then the financial documents.
Finally, Elena played one last recording.
Grant's voice filled the courtroom.
“Once she's postpartum, nobody will question my version.”
Grant closed his eyes.
His attorney slowly lowered his head.
The judge looked at Grant.
“Mr. Mercer, did you make that statement?”
Grant said nothing.
The judge repeated the question.
Still nothing.
Then Claire began crying.
I held her closer.
And something strange happened.
Grant looked at the baby.
His expression changed.
For the first time, he looked less like a businessman.
More like a frightened man who had finally realized what he was about to lose.
But then his phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
He whispered:
“They found the account.”
Elena looked at me.
“What account?”
Grant stared at her.
May you like
“The offshore account.”
And suddenly, the entire courtroom became still.
