Chapter 6 - THE BROTHER WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

Evan had always been the quiet one.

Grant's younger brother.

The man who rarely spoke during family dinners.

The man who usually looked away when Grant became cruel.

I had assumed he was weak.

I was wrong.

He met us in a hotel conference room that evening.

He looked terrified.

“I should have said something years ago.”

I sat across from him.

“Why didn't you?”

“Because Grant threatened me.”

“With what?”

“My company.”

Evan explained that he had discovered the money transfers months earlier.

He had confronted Grant.

Grant threatened to destroy Evan's business.

Then he showed Evan a document.

A contract that would make Evan responsible for several fraudulent transactions.

“If I talked,” Evan whispered, “he would send me to prison.”

Elena leaned forward.

“Do you have the original?”

Evan nodded.

He placed a small encrypted drive on the table.

“There is everything.”

Inside were thousands of emails.

Grant had been creating shell companies.

Moving money.

Forging signatures.

Manipulating company valuations.

And paying people to build a case against me.

But the most disturbing file was a recorded conversation between Grant and his mother.

Lorraine.

I pressed play.

Grant's voice came first.

“She won't fight if we make her think she's broke.”

Lorraine answered:

“And the children?”

“She'll give up eventually.”

Then Lorraine said something that made my blood run cold.

“What about the baby?”

Grant paused.

“Once the baby is born, we'll use the hospital records.”

I stopped the recording.

“What did she mean?”

Evan looked down.

“I don't know.”

But Elena did.

She immediately contacted the hospital.

The next morning, we learned that someone had attempted to access my prenatal medical records.

Someone had used a false authorization.

The request had been submitted under my name.

And the person who submitted it was connected to Grant's private investigator.

That was enough.

The investigation widened.

And then the investigators found something worse.

A payment made to a medical consultant.

The description read:

POST-BIRTH CAPACITY ASSESSMENT.

I felt sick.

Grant hadn't simply planned to take my money.

He had planned to manufacture evidence about my mental state after delivery.

He wanted a newborn baby.

Two frightened children.

A mother recovering from childbirth.

And a court file designed to make me look incapable.

He had mistaken exhaustion for weakness.

He had mistaken motherhood for helplessness.

He had mistaken my silence for surrender.

May you like

But there was one thing he hadn't planned for.

My baby decided to arrive early.
