Chapter 5 - THE DAY THE MASK BROKE

Grant filed for emergency custody on a Thursday morning.
He claimed I had abandoned the marital home.
He claimed I was emotionally unstable.
He claimed I had taken the children without permission.
He even claimed I had “financially endangered” the family.
But he had forgotten one thing.
Evidence.
Elena arrived at court with six bankers' boxes.
Grant's attorney looked confident.
Until the boxes opened.
Bank statements.
Corporate records.
Audio transcripts.
Forged documents.
Private investigator invoices.
Payments to Tessa.
Payments to a consultant who had prepared psychological profiles about me.
And finally, the recordings.
The judge listened to Grant's own voice describing how he planned to portray me as unstable.
The courtroom became silent.
Grant's attorney asked for a recess.
The judge refused.
Then Elena presented the most important document.
The corporate ownership records.
Grant's face changed.
The judge looked at him.
“Mr. Mercer, are you telling this court that your wife has no financial interest in Mercer Holdings?”
Grant swallowed.
“Yes.”
Elena placed the document before the judge.
“Then perhaps you can explain why she owns sixty percent.”
Grant stared at the paper.
I watched the confidence disappear from his face.
His entire lifestyle had been built on a company he did not control.
The judge turned toward me.
“Mrs. Mercer, did you authorize the transfers presented today?”
“No.”
“Did you authorize the alleged divorce documents?”
“No.”
“Did you authorize the custody strategy described in these recordings?”
“No.”
The judge looked at Grant.
“Then this court has serious concerns.”
Grant suddenly stood.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
“No,” Elena said quietly.
“This is fraud.”
Grant's attorney grabbed his arm.
“Sit down.”
But Grant looked at me.
For the first time, there was no arrogance in his eyes.
Only desperation.
“You're destroying my life.”
I stared at him.
“No.”
I took a breath.
“You destroyed it yourself.”
The judge granted temporary protective orders.
The children would remain with me.
Grant was prohibited from entering the townhouse.
And an independent forensic investigation into Mercer Holdings was ordered.
As we walked outside, reporters waited near the courthouse.
I hated the cameras.
But then Owen ran toward me.
“Mom!”
I knelt.
He wrapped his arms around me.
Lily joined him.
For the first time in months, I felt like I could breathe.
Then my phone rang.
Elena answered.
Her face changed.
“What?”
She listened.
Then looked at me.
“There's been a development.”
“What?”
“Someone inside Mercer Holdings just turned over evidence.”
“Who?”
She lowered her voice.
“Grant's brother.”
My heart sank.
May you like
Because if his brother was talking...
it meant the betrayal inside Grant's family had gone much deeper than I realized.
