Chapter 5 - THE DIVORCE HE HAD ALREADY PLANNED

Vance had planned our divorce before he apparently had a mistress.

That should have comforted me.

It didn’t.

The file contained timelines.

Asset transfers.

Projected legal costs.

Suggestions for presenting company debt as marital obligations.

One sentence had been highlighted:

Maintain normal household spending pattern until capital restructuring complete.

Normal household spending.

That was me.

Groceries.

Landscaping.

Utilities.

His dry cleaning.

The invisible rhythm of a marriage he had already decided to leave.

Another note read:

Mara unlikely to challenge financial records if settlement preserves residence.

He thought giving me my own house would make me grateful enough not to look deeper.

I stared at it until the words blurred.

Sophie read over my shoulder.

“He thinks you’re stupid.”

“No.”

I closed the file.

“He thinks I’m peaceful.”

For years, people had confused those things.

Vance most of all.

Dana uncovered the scale of the problem by evening.

Sterling Strategic Ventures had lost nearly $1.8 million on two failed acquisitions.

Vance concealed the losses from lenders.

Howard Pierce moved money between accounts to keep the company appearing solvent.

Then they began looking for new collateral.

My home.

Sophie’s trust.

My credit.

Khloe’s name.

Whatever they could reach.

The Dubai investors were supposed to inject enough money to cover old debt before anyone discovered it.

A financial patch over a structural collapse.

My marriage had become one more asset holding up the ceiling.

At 9:06 P.M., our front alarm sounded.

Sophie froze.

I checked the camera.

Howard Pierce stood on the porch.

Holding a briefcase.

I called Evelyn before opening anything.

She arrived with a security officer.

Howard smiled when the door finally opened.

“Mara, thank God.”

I stayed behind the chain.

“What do you want?”

“Vance called. He said there’s been a misunderstanding.”

“Then speak to my lawyer.”

His expression tightened.

“This is family business.”

“You’re my accountant.”

“I’ve known you fifteen years.”

“And apparently forged me for several of them.”

His smile disappeared.

“I never forged anything.”

“Then you won’t mind the investigation.”

He stepped closer.

“I need one file from Vance’s office.”

“No.”

“It contains privileged business material.”

“Then get a court order.”

“Mara.”

There it was again.

Men who had ignored me for years suddenly remembered my name when they needed obedience.

Howard lowered his voice.

“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”

“You’re right.”

I smiled.

“That’s why I hired people who do.”

He left.

But security footage showed him pausing beside the garage.

Looking toward the side entrance.

Calculating.

Evelyn advised me to stay elsewhere that night.

I refused.

The house had been mine before Vance.

I was tired of being the person who moved.

At midnight, Dana found what Howard had come for.

A red folder hidden beneath the false bottom of Vance’s desk.

On the tab:

SOPHIE MERCER.

Inside were credit applications.

Business cards.

A financing agreement.

All issued using Sophie’s Social Security number.

She had never applied for any of them.

One account carried a balance of $118,400.

Sophie sat beside me, completely white.

“He stole my identity.”

I wanted to say no.

I couldn’t.

Then Dana turned to the final page.

One payment from Sophie’s fraudulent account had funded a luxury hotel reservation.

Dubai.

The reservation date was fourteen months earlier.

Six months before Khloe claimed the affair began.

May you like

Either Vance had been lying to Khloe too…

Or Khloe had just lied to me.
