Chapter 3 - THE FILE WITH MY NAME ON IT

I found the signature file exactly where Dana said it would be.

Not hidden deeply.

Not encrypted.

Vance had stored it inside a folder called FAMILY ADMIN.

That insulted me almost as much as the forgery.

My signature was apparently household administration.

Insurance forms.

Bank documents.

Investment authorizations.

Seven years of scanned paperwork.

Dana began comparing them.

Some were legitimate.

Some were not.

The difference was invisible until you knew what to look for.

Vance had built his fraud inside ordinary life.

That afternoon, Evelyn obtained an emergency preservation order preventing Sterling Strategic Ventures from transferring disputed family assets.

At 2:11, Vance finally realized something was wrong.

He called.

I answered.

“Mara.”

His voice was controlled.

Too controlled.

“My corporate card was declined.”

“Then call your company.”

“My personal card was also declined.”

“That card is attached to my account.”

Silence.

“What are you doing?”

“Protecting my money.”

His tone changed.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

“Put Sophie on.”

“No.”

“Mara, this is not how adults handle marital disagreements.”

I almost laughed.

“You removed your wedding ring and flew first class to Dubai with Khloe Kensington.”

Nothing.

Not denial.

Not shock.

Nothing.

Then:

“You went through my office.”

“You used my signature.”

His breathing changed.

“What did you find?”

Not What are you talking about?

What did you find?

I looked at Sophie.

She heard it too.

“All of it,” I said.

That was a lie.

But fear often tells you where the truth is buried.

Vance went silent.

Then he said:

“Do not touch anything else in that office.”

“Your belongings are already in storage.”

“What?”

“You can collect them when you return.”

“You moved my things?”

“Yes.”

“You had no right—”

“My attorney disagrees.”

“Mara.”

For years, that tone made me apologize before I understood what I had supposedly done wrong.

This time, I waited.

He lowered his voice.

“You’re overreacting because you saw Khloe’s name.”

“No.”

“This Dubai trip is business.”

“With your wedding ring off?”

Another silence.

I continued:

“The affair is almost boring compared with the financial fraud.”

He swore quietly.

Then:

“Who have you spoken to?”

“My attorney.”

“Anyone else?”

“Why?”

“Answer me.”

“No.”

I hung up.

My hands were shaking.

Sophie came around the table and hugged me.

Five minutes later, my phone vibrated again.

Not Vance.

Unknown international number.

A message.

Mrs. Sterling, this is Khloe Kensington.

I stared.

A second message arrived.

Please don’t tell Vance I contacted you.

Then:

I thought I understood why we were in Dubai. I was wrong.

My heartbeat slowed.

I typed nothing.

Khloe sent a photograph.

An investor presentation.

On the cover:

STERLING-KENSINGTON GLOBAL PARTNERS.

Underneath were three names.

Vance Sterling.

Khloe Kensington.

And Mara Sterling.

My name appeared as “Founding Capital Partner.”

I had never heard of the company.

Khloe’s final message arrived seconds later.

He told the investors your house and personal assets were backing the deal.

Then another:

May you like

There’s something else, Mara.

Vance has a life-insurance policy on you that you never signed.
