Chapter 5 - VANESSA KNOCKED ON MY DOOR

The mistress came to my house carrying my husband’s laptop.

It was raining when she arrived.

I recognized her before she spoke.

Thirty-two, maybe thirty-three. Dark blond hair. Expensive camel coat. Beautiful in the polished, effortless way that made me understand why Liam had expected me to feel intimidated.

But Vanessa Cole did not look victorious.

She looked terrified.

“You’re Emma?”

“You know I am.”

Her eyes dropped.

“I deserve that.”

I almost closed the door.

Then she lifted the laptop.

“This belongs to Liam.”

My heartbeat changed.

“Why do you have it?”

“Because he left it at my apartment.”

Of course he did.

The words tasted bitter.

Vanessa swallowed.

“I need to talk to you.”

“About sleeping with my husband?”

“About what he’s doing with your name.”

That stopped me.

I let her inside, but not because I trusted her.

I texted Rachel and Noah first.

Vanessa sat at my kitchen table, the same table where Liam’s family had watched his lies collapse.

For almost a minute, she said nothing.

Then she whispered, “He lied to me too.”

I laughed once.

“Congratulations. We have something in common.”

Her eyes filled with shame.

“He told me your marriage was over.”

“Men have been using that line since electricity was invented.”

“I know.”

“He told you he hated me?”

“Yes.”

“That he was divorcing me?”

“Yes.”

“That I trapped him with the baby?”

Her face answered before her mouth did.

Something inside me burned.

Vanessa looked toward Hailey’s nursery.

“He said you barely let him see her.”

I stared at her.

“He lives here.”

Her face fell.

“I know that now.”

She opened Liam’s laptop.

“I started getting suspicious when he asked me to sign corporate paperwork.”

“HML.”

She nodded.

“He said the initials meant Horizon Management Logistics.”

Despite everything, I nearly smiled at the absurdity.

“What did you think you were signing?”

“Consulting agreements. Investment documents.”

“And what were they?”

“I don’t know.”

She pushed the laptop toward me.

“I found a folder last night.”

Password protected.

Vanessa had not been able to open it.

But the folder name was visible.

EMMA EXIT.

A cold wave moved through me.

“Exit?”

“I don’t know what it means.”

Then Vanessa said the sentence that changed the direction of everything.

“He broke up with me yesterday.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because I asked too many questions.”

She twisted her hands.

“He told me I was becoming a liability.”

Rachel arrived twenty minutes later.

With Vanessa’s permission, she photographed the computer and told us not to access anything improperly.

Then she asked Vanessa about the life insurance.

Vanessa went pale.

“He said it was an asset-protection strategy.”

“What did he tell you HML would receive?”

“I thought business proceeds.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

Rachel showed her the policy figure.

$2.5 million.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.”

I watched her closely.

“You seriously didn’t know?”

“No.”

Then she remembered something.

“Wait.”

She opened her purse and pulled out a small key.

“Liam gave me this three months ago.”

It was a safe-deposit key.

“He said if anything ever happened, I should empty the box before talking to anyone.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“Which bank?”

Vanessa told her.

We went together.

The bank would not allow us access without authorization.

But Rachel made calls.

Documents were filed.

And by the following afternoon, a court order temporarily preserved the box.

Liam could not empty it.

Neither could we.

Not yet.

As we left the bank, Vanessa touched my arm.

“There’s one more thing.”

I pulled away.

“What?”

“The first night Liam kissed me, he’d been drinking.”

I waited.

“He said something strange.”

“What?”

“He said you were sitting on money you didn’t even know existed.”

My skin prickled.

“How much?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“He called it your grandfather’s money.”

I stopped walking.

My grandfather had died when I was nineteen.

He had left me nothing.

At least that was what my mother had always told me.

But when I called her and repeated Vanessa’s words, my mother became completely silent.

Then she whispered:

“Emma... I think it’s time I tell you what your grandfather actually left you.”
