Chapter 1 - THE ANNIVERSARY TOAST

“My dear husband, Liam,” I said, lifting my glass while every person at the table turned toward me.
Liam’s smile looked convincing to everyone except me.
His mother, Diane, clasped her hands beneath her chin. My mother smiled proudly. Liam’s younger brother, Noah, leaned back in his chair with a piece of pumpkin pie still on his fork.
And Hailey slept peacefully in the bassinet beside me.
“To two unforgettable years,” I continued. “To promises. To honesty. And especially... to knowing what your spouse truly thinks of you.”
Liam’s fingers tightened around his wineglass.
I saw it.
Nobody else did.
“Emma,” he said quietly, “what is this?”
I smiled.
“A surprise.”
Then I reached for the small Bluetooth speaker sitting on the sideboard.
Six days earlier, after that accidental phone call, I had discovered something Liam apparently did not know.
My phone automatically recorded calls when connected to the baby-monitoring app I used because I often spoke hands-free while feeding Hailey.
I had listened to the recording only once.
Once had been enough.
I pressed play.
Liam’s voice filled our dining room.
“She’s driving me insane. Sending me pictures of the baby, asking when I’m coming home... I just want her to leave me alone.”
Silence swallowed the room.
Liam went white.
His father slowly placed his fork down.
Then came the woman’s muffled voice.
Then Liam’s laugh.
“Of course I hate her. I barely touch her anymore. Just wait. I’ll divorce her, and then I’ll marry you.”
My mother covered her mouth.
Diane whispered, “Liam...”
Then came the kiss.
I stopped the recording.
Nobody moved.
Liam stood so quickly his chair scraped violently across the hardwood floor.
“You recorded me?”
“You forgot to hang up.”
“That’s illegal.”
“No,” Noah suddenly said.
Everyone turned toward him.
Liam’s younger brother was an attorney.
And unlike Liam, he had always been careful with his words.
“Not necessarily,” Noah said calmly. “But I think your bigger problem is that you just confessed to cheating on your wife in front of twelve witnesses.”
Liam’s eyes flashed.
“This is none of your business.”
“You made it everyone’s business when you lied to all of us.”
I looked at my husband.
“For six days, you came home, kissed my forehead, held our daughter for photographs, and lied to my face.”
“It isn’t what you think.”
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“I heard you say you hated me.”
Liam glanced toward our parents.
Then something changed in his expression.
The panic disappeared.
In its place came cold calculation.
“Fine,” he said.
One word.
No apology.
No explanation.
Just fine.
Then he looked directly at me.
“You want the truth in front of everyone?”
My stomach tightened.
Liam reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and opened something.
“You’re going to regret embarrassing me.”
Noah stood.
“Liam.”
But Liam ignored him.
He turned the screen toward me.
It showed our joint savings account.
Balance: $3,412.
I stopped breathing.
Six days earlier, there had been more than $87,000.
“What did you do?” I whispered.
Liam smiled for the first time that night.
“You wanted an anniversary surprise, Emma.”
He slipped the phone back into his pocket.
“So did I.”
May you like
And that was when I realized my cheating husband had not spent the last six days planning to apologize.
He had spent them preparing to leave me with almost nothing.
