Chapter 3 - HIS FATHER CAME BACK ALONE

At nine that night, someone knocked three times on my front door.
Liam had not come home.
He had texted only once.
STAY OUT OF MY BUSINESS.
I had taken screenshots of every account, downloaded every statement I could access, and changed the passwords to anything legally mine.
Noah had gone home hours earlier.
Hailey was asleep against my shoulder when the knocking came again.
I checked the camera.
Robert Carter stood alone on my porch.
Liam’s father looked ten years older than he had twenty-four hours earlier.
I opened the door but kept the chain latched.
“Emma.”
“What do you want?”
“To explain.”
“Your name is on the company Liam used to hide our money.”
Robert closed his eyes.
“So you found it.”
Those four words frightened me more than denial would have.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
I almost slammed the door.
“Wait.”
He reached into his coat and held up a thick envelope.
“I didn’t help Liam steal from you.”
“Your signature says otherwise.”
“My signature helped create the company. That part is true.”
“Why?”
Robert looked past me toward the nursery.
“Because Liam lied to me too.”
I hesitated.
He lowered the envelope.
“Please.”
Against my better judgment, I let him inside.
We sat at the kitchen table where less than twenty-four hours earlier I had played Liam’s betrayal for our families.
Robert did not touch the coffee I offered.
“Seven months ago,” he began, “Liam told me he wanted to start an investment company for Hailey.”
“She wasn’t even born.”
“He said it would be a family vehicle. Something for her future.”
I looked at him coldly.
“And you believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
There was shame in his voice.
“He asked me to be an organizer because he said your pregnancy was difficult and he didn’t want to burden you with paperwork.”
My jaw tightened.
“My pregnancy wasn’t difficult.”
Robert nodded.
“I know that now.”
He slid the envelope toward me.
Inside were copies of corporate documents, bank statements, and several printed emails.
One email was from Liam.
Dad, Emma gets anxious about money. Keep this between us until I finalize everything.
Another read:
Vanessa understands the structure. I need everything separated before spring.
I stared at the date.
It had been sent three weeks before Hailey was born.
“Who is Vanessa?”
Robert’s face hardened.
“I assumed she was the accountant.”
“She isn’t?”
“I met her last week.”
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“Where?”
“At Liam’s office.”
“And?”
“She kissed him.”
My throat tightened.
So Vanessa Cole was the woman from the call.
Liam had registered a company with his mistress while I was pregnant with his child.
Robert pushed another page toward me.
“I confronted him. He told me to mind my own business.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I wanted proof before destroying my son’s marriage.”
I nearly laughed.
“Your son handled that himself.”
“Yes.”
He looked down.
“And I was a coward.”
For several seconds, only the refrigerator hummed between us.
Then Robert pointed to the final page.
“This is why I came tonight.”
It was a bank transfer authorization.
$120,000.
Scheduled for Monday morning.
Destination: V.C. Holdings.
“Tomorrow?” I whispered.
“Yes.”
“Can we stop it?”
“Maybe.”
My eyes moved lower.
The source account was unfamiliar.
“What account is this?”
Robert looked at me.
“That’s the part Liam never expected me to discover.”
The account was not in Liam’s name.
It was in mine.
Emma Morgan Carter.
I stared at the page in disbelief.
“I’ve never seen this account.”
Robert nodded grimly.
“That’s because you didn’t open it.”
May you like
And suddenly the missing $87,000 no longer looked like the worst thing Liam had done.
Someone had created a financial account using my identity.
