Chapter 8 - HAROLD WAS STILL HER FATHER

Elena did not cry when she saw the DNA result.

Not immediately.

She felt angry that biology had been allowed to intrude on grief.

Harold Bellweather was her father.

The man who taught her spreadsheets at fourteen.

The man who drove three hours because she cried during her first year at Columbia.

The man who told her never to sign a document she had not read twice.

DNA could describe origin.

It could not revise a life.

But origin mattered now because someone had used Harold’s stored genetic material under Elena’s medical file.

Naomi reviewed the prenatal data.

The fetus had no first-degree relationship to Harold either.

Good.

EB-01 was another false donor label.

Someone had deliberately mixed identities.

Why?

To confuse future paternity review?

To manipulate trust triggers?

Then Camille finally contacted counsel from Switzerland.

She wanted immunity discussions.

Her statement began with one sentence:

Bianca did not create the reproductive program.

That surprised everyone.

Who did?

Dominic Moretti Sr.

Lucien’s father.

Before he died.

Dominic had become obsessed with future succession after discovering a flaw in the family trust.

What flaw?

A historic founder provision gave controlling rights not necessarily to his eldest male descendant—

but to the descendant branch carrying a particular genetic marker tied to Moretti’s original founder.

Ridiculous by modern standards.

Still legally embedded in an old trust.

Dominic attempted to map bloodlines.

He stored samples.

Collected relatives’ tests.

Created codes.

Then Bianca inherited the system after his death.

She expanded it.

Manipulated it.

But did not invent it.

Then Camille revealed:

Harold Bellweather had discovered the program.

He confronted Dominic.

Dominic threatened to exclude Bellweather from future financing.

Harold responded by restructuring his collateral rights into Elena’s protective voting block.

That was the real war beneath the marriage.

Not Moretti versus Bellweather money.

Moretti lineage versus Bellweather governance.

Then Elena asked:

“Why was Harold’s sample inside the system?”

Camille hesitated.

“Because Dominic believed Harold had Moretti blood.”

Silence.

What?

Harold Bellweather’s mother had worked for the Moretti family before marrying.

Rumors.

Old affair.

No proof.

Dominic secretly tested Harold through discarded medical material.

Result?

Possible second-degree relationship to Dominic’s father.

If accurate, Harold was himself part of a collateral Moretti branch.

That could explain why his descendants—if any—might possess founder rights.

But Elena was not biologically Harold’s child.

So his biological line did not pass through her.

Then why had he left everything to Elena?

Because parenthood was choice.

Maybe.

Or because he knew who she actually was.

Camille said:

“Harold knew.”

“When?”

“Before you were ten.”

Elena’s hands went cold.

Who were her biological parents?

Camille did not know completely.

Only one record existed.

Maternal sample:

ISABEL REYES.

Name unfamiliar.

Paternal sample:

SEALED.

Harold and his wife, Katherine Bellweather, had adopted Elena privately as an infant.

Legal papers were sealed.

Elena knew she had been born in Boston.

Everything else suddenly uncertain.

Then Camille said:

“Bianca was searching for your paternal identity.”

Why?

Because if Elena’s biological father belonged to a Moretti collateral branch, Elena’s child might carry founder rights independently of Lucien.

That could explain the reproductive manipulation.

Someone may have chosen a donor not to create a random pregnancy—

but to produce a child with a particular combination of bloodlines.

Elena felt physically ill.

“Who is the donor?”

Camille said:

“I never knew his name.”

“Who selected the sample?”

“Dominic’s old trust adviser.”

Stephen D’Ambrose.

Age seventy-nine.

Still alive.

Retired in Connecticut.

He had controlled the genetic archive after Dominic’s death.

Bianca used him.

Maybe he used her.

Then investigators located D’Ambrose.

He refused interview.

But his records were subpoenaed.

Inside:

One map.

Moretti descendants.

Bellweather collateral branch.

Reyes line.

And Elena.

Connected by red ink to an unnamed male.

Label:

SUBJECT F.

Below:

POTENTIAL ORIGINAL FOUNDER DESCENDANT.

Then another line:

PAIR WITH E. BELLWEATHER ONLY IF L. MORETTI PROVES INFERTILE.

Elena stopped breathing.

Lucien’s infertility had not merely been hidden.

It had activated a contingency plan.

If Lucien could not father a child, someone intended Elena to become pregnant by Subject F.

Whoever he was.

The procedure Camille performed had not been a random fraud.

It was a planned substitution written years earlier.

Then Elena noticed the date.

The contingency map had been created nine years ago.

Before she married Lucien.

Someone had anticipated their marriage.

Their infertility.

Her pregnancy.

Or at least planned for the possibility.

She looked at Naomi.

“How did I meet Lucien?”

A charity architecture gala.

Her father had introduced them.

Harold Bellweather.

The man who knew about the program.

The man who knew he was not her biological father.

May you like

The man who had nevertheless guided her directly into Lucien Moretti’s orbit.

And for the first time, Elena wondered whether even the beginning of her marriage had been entirely hers.
