Chapter 6 - THE SAMPLE WITH LUCIEN'S NAME WAS NOT LUCIEN'S

Lucien looked at the fertility file as if it were written in fire.
Three years earlier, after Elena and Lucien had struggled to conceive, they visited a private clinic.
Both were tested.
Elena remembered it clearly.
Her results were normal.
Lucien’s showed mild abnormalities but nothing conclusive.
The doctor recommended lifestyle changes.
They stopped trying aggressively for a while.
Then, six months before the night Celeste entered the mansion, Elena became pregnant naturally.
Or so she believed.
Vincent placed two reports side by side.
The original laboratory archive.
The report Elena and Lucien received.
They were not identical.
Lucien’s patient-facing report:
Reduced count. Fertility possible.
Archive:
NO VIABLE PATIENT SAMPLE RECEIVED. SUBSTITUTE FAMILY REFERENCE USED FOR QUALITY CONTROL.
“What substitute?” Elena asked.
Vincent looked sick.
“M-04.”
Dominic Sr.
Again.
Lucien stared.
“They tested my father’s sample under my file?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The clinic claimed an administrative error.
Vincent did not believe it.
Neither did Naomi.
Then a second archive appeared.
Two years earlier.
Lucien underwent another test privately after one of their failed conception cycles.
Specimen code:
L-07.
This one appeared valid.
Result:
Severe non-obstructive azoospermia.
No viable sperm detected.
Elena stopped breathing.
Lucien had never told her.
He looked away.
“You knew.”
“I knew there was a problem.”
“When?”
“Two years.”
“And you let me believe the problem was us.”
His eyes filled.
“I was ashamed.”
The same word men used when shame became permission to lie.
Then Elena placed both hands over her stomach.
“If Lucien is infertile…”
No one finished the sentence.
Her child.
She looked at Lucien.
“I have never been with anyone else.”
“I know.”
His answer came immediately.
That mattered.
Even now.
Then Naomi asked:
“Was Elena undergoing any medical procedures around conception?”
Elena frowned.
“No.”
Routine prenatal vitamins.
Annual exam.
Nothing else.
Then she remembered.
A hormone panel.
Dr. Camille Moretti.
Lucien’s cousin and private family physician.
Camille had insisted Elena’s irregular cycles required “supportive supplementation.”
One injection.
Maybe two.
Elena had not questioned it.
Her blood went cold.
“What did Camille give me?”
Lucien stood.
“No.”
Bianca looked away.
There.
Again.
A face before a confession.
Elena turned.
“What did you do?”
Bianca said:
“Nothing that harmed you.”
“WHAT DID YOU DO?”
The first time Elena shouted.
The room went silent.
Bianca’s composure cracked.
“You wanted a child.”
“With my husband.”
“Yes.”
“That is not an answer.”
Camille’s records were subpoenaed.
The medication was not simply hormonal support.
Elena had undergone a covert intrauterine insemination procedure during what she had been told was a diagnostic appointment.
She remembered discomfort.
Camille said it was a biopsy.
It wasn’t.
“Whose sample?” Elena whispered.
No one wanted to answer.
Donor code:
L-07F.
Family-linked specimen.
Not Lucien.
Not Dominic Sr.
Naomi demanded genetic registry access.
The donor was:
VINCENT MORETTI.
The room exploded.
Lucien crossed the table before security stopped him.
“You used my uncle?”
Vincent stumbled backward.
“I did not authorize that!”
Bianca shouted:
“Stop!”
Everyone turned.
Vincent’s face had gone white.
“I stored a sample twenty years ago before cancer treatment.”
He had survived lymphoma in his thirties.
The sample remained in a family reproductive archive.
He had never consented to its use.
Elena could not breathe.
If the records were accurate—
the child inside her might biologically belong to Lucien’s uncle.
Not Lucien.
Not through infidelity.
Through medical assault and deception.
Naomi immediately stopped everyone.
“No conclusions without independent testing.”
Yes.
Evidence.
Elena clung to that.
Because paperwork had already lied repeatedly.
DNA would decide.
Prenatal paternity testing was possible.
Elena agreed.
Lucien agreed to provide a sample.
Vincent did too.
Bianca refused to provide anything.
Not needed.
The test returned forty-eight hours later.
Lucien Moretti:
Excluded as biological father.
Vincent Moretti:
Excluded.
Dominic Moretti Sr.:
Excluded.
Elena stared at Naomi.
“Then who?”
The laboratory detected paternal kinship with none of the three tested Moretti men.
The donor code was false.
Completely false.
Someone had labeled an unrelated man’s sample as Vincent’s.
The child was not a Moretti.
Lucien sat beside Elena when they heard it.
He did not touch her.
He knew he had lost the right.
But his face broke.
Elena felt strangely hollow.
“My baby is mine.”
Naomi nodded.
“Yes.”
“That is what matters first.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“We need to identify the biological father because of medical history and potential criminal conduct.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Not for the company.
Not for the trust.
For her child.
Then Marcus Bell called from Moretti Capital.
“Elena, the Bellweather conversion file just changed.”
“What?”
“Your father built a second trigger.”
“If the child is not Lucien’s?”
“Yes.”
“What happens?”
Marcus swallowed.
“Your thirty-four percent does not dilute.”
Relief.
Then:
“It increases.”
Elena stared.
“How much?”
“To fifty-one percent.”
Silence.
Her father had planned for the possibility that the Moretti family interfered with her reproductive or marital rights.
How could he have anticipated something this specific?
Naomi read the clause.
If Elena bears a child during marriage to Lucien Moretti but paternity is disputed, excluded, or compromised through documented reproductive misconduct attributable to Moretti family agents, Bellweather converts to majority voting control pending independent review.
Her father had not predicted the exact crime.
He had predicted the family.
Then Elena noticed one phrase.
“Moretti family agents.”
Meaning he feared them.
Long before this.
Why?
Naomi opened Harold Bellweather’s sealed letter.
First line:
Elena, if this clause activates, Bianca finally did what I was afraid she would do.
May you like
Elena stopped breathing.
Her father had known Bianca might interfere with her pregnancy before Elena even married Lucien.
