Chapter 3 - THE CHILD WHO EXISTED BEFORE THE MISTRESS

Elena read the file three times.
Five years earlier.
That mattered.
She and Lucien had been married seven.
If C-01 was real, the child had been conceived during their marriage.
Before Celeste joined Moretti Capital.
Before Elena’s pregnancy.
Before all of this.
“Name?” Elena asked.
Thomas could not find one.
The beneficiary record had been deliberately masked.
Only trust counsel could unseal it.
Who was trust counsel?
Vincent Moretti.
Lucien’s uncle.
Of course.
Naomi obtained an emergency governance order preventing destruction or alteration of records.
By noon, Vincent’s office produced the sealed schedule.
Child:
NICHOLAS JAMES MORETTI.
Mother:
MARIA SANTOS.
Elena knew Maria.
Not personally.
A former executive assistant in Moretti Capital’s Miami office.
She had left suddenly four years earlier.
Employees said she moved to Spain.
Elena had sent her a farewell email.
No reply.
“Was Lucien sleeping with her?” Naomi asked.
“I don’t know.”
That answer hurt more than yes would have.
Elena had spent years believing she understood the shape of her marriage.
Now every blank space became suspicious.
Then Thomas found payments.
Maria Santos had received $24,000 every month through a Moretti family trust for forty-eight months.
School fees.
Housing.
Security.
Health insurance.
No corporate money.
Family money.
That made it cleaner legally.
Not morally.
Then Elena found one document that changed the question.
Paternity acknowledgment:
LUCIEN MORETTI.
Signature verified.
He knew.
He had known for five years.
The phone rang.
Lucien.
Elena answered.
“Is Nicholas yours?”
No greeting.
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Her body went cold.
“Five years?”
“Yes.”
“Who is Maria?”
“You know who she is.”
“No.”
“I mean what was she to you?”
A pause.
“One night.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“While we were married.”
“Yes.”
The word hurt.
Still, Celeste remained unexplained.
Two affairs.
Two children?
Maybe.
Then Elena asked:
“Why hide Nicholas?”
“My mother insisted.”
Bianca.
Of course.
“She said a child outside the marriage would destabilize the family trusts.”
“So you paid him to disappear.”
“No.”
His voice sharpened.
“I paid for everything.”
“That isn’t presence.”
“He has a good life.”
“That wasn’t the question.”
Lucien went quiet.
Then something unexpected happened.
He said:
“I know.”
Not defensively.
Brokenly.
For one second, Elena heard shame.
It did not absolve him.
But it complicated him.
Then:
“Does Nicholas know you’re his father?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Maria asked me not to enter his life unless she changed her mind.”
Elena absorbed that.
Maria had agency.
Maybe.
She needed to verify.
Then Elena asked:
“What did you mean when you said Celeste’s baby wasn’t the first continuity child?”
“Nicholas.”
“So Celeste’s pregnancy was planned around the trust?”
“No.”
“Truth.”
“I was sleeping with her before we knew you were pregnant.”
That sentence landed like a clean blade.
No corporate excuse.
No strategy.
He cheated because he wanted to.
Then:
“When she became pregnant, my mother saw an opportunity.”
There.
Bianca transformed betrayal into governance.
“What opportunity?”
“Nicholas cannot be activated under the family reserve.”
“Why?”
“His mother never signed the continuity agreement.”
Good for Maria.
Celeste apparently had.
When?
Before pregnancy?
Lucien hesitated.
“Elena…”
“When?”
“Six weeks before.”
The room went silent.
Naomi looked up.
“That means Celeste signed a potential-child governance agreement before she conceived.”
Elena repeated it.
Lucien said:
“It wasn’t like that.”
“How was it?”
“My mother wanted protection if the relationship became serious.”
“Elena,” Naomi whispered, “ask who drafted it.”
She did.
Lucien answered:
“Vincent.”
“Who proposed it?”
Silence.
“Lucien.”
“Celeste did.”
That surprised everyone.
Celeste had asked for the arrangement.
Why?
Then Elena received an email.
From Celeste.
Subject:
YOU NEED TO SEE WHAT YOUR HUSBAND DID NOT TELL EITHER OF US.
Attachment:
A fertility-clinic invoice.
Patient:
CELESTE VAUGHN.
Partner specimen:
L. MORETTI.
Procedure:
Embryo transfer.
Elena stopped breathing.
Celeste’s pregnancy had not happened naturally.
May you like
It had been medically planned.
And Lucien had just told Elena he thought it had.
