Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN'T MINE

I had spent thirteen years signing my name as Claire Bennett Langley.
I knew every curve.
Every hesitation.
Every strange little upward stroke at the end of the L.
The signature on the document looked almost perfect.
Almost.
I enlarged it on the projection wall.
David stared at it.
Martha whispered, “Claire, what exactly are you accusing him of?”
“I’m not accusing anyone.”
I turned toward David.
“I’m asking him to explain why my signature appears on a loan guarantee I’ve never seen.”
David’s face hardened.
“That document was part of the refinancing package.”
“No.”
“Claire—”
“I was in Denver the date it was notarized.”
Silence.
Rebecca immediately looked at the date.
“You were at that nursing conference.”
I nodded.
She remembered because she had watched our dog that weekend.
David’s attorney friend, Paul, who had been drinking quietly beside the fireplace, suddenly set down his glass.
David noticed.
So did I.
“Paul?” Richard asked.
Paul’s face had gone gray.
“I didn’t prepare that document.”
Another crack.
David moved toward me.
Not aggressively.
Just close enough to try the voice he used when he wanted conversations to become private.
“Can we talk upstairs?”
“No.”
“Claire.”
“No more upstairs.”
That sentence landed harder than I expected.
Elena looked away.
David lowered his voice.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
I almost laughed.
“I finally do.”
The message I had received came from Natalie Brooks, a forensic accountant and an old friend from before my marriage.
Three weeks earlier, I had quietly given her copies of everything I found.
She had followed the money.
And the money had gone somewhere I never expected.
David had moved nearly $840,000 through Langley Holdings during the previous two years.
Some had gone toward investment properties.
Some toward Elena.
But $310,000 had gone into an account labeled only with initials:
M.L.T.
Martha saw them on the screen.
Her entire expression changed.
Richard noticed.
“Martha?”
She took one step backward.

That was when I realized my mother-in-law knew exactly what M.L.T. meant.
And whatever David had been hiding had started long before Elena came back into his life.
