Chapter 3 - MY FATHER-IN-LAW SAW HIS OWN SIGNATURE

David reached the top of the staircase just as Richard said, “I never signed that.”
Everyone looked up.
David stopped.
Elena stood two steps behind him.
There are moments when a person realizes the world they entered is not the world they expected.
I watched that realization move across David’s face.
The darkened room.
The projector.
His father standing beneath a document carrying his signature.
Me holding the tablet.
Elena understood faster.
She moved her hand away from David.
“What’s going on?”
Nobody answered her.
David descended slowly.
“Claire.”
Just my name.
Soft.
Controlled.
He still believed he could manage me.
“What did you do?”
I almost smiled.
For months, every conversation had begun that way.
Not what happened.
Not what did I do.
What did you do, Claire?
Richard pointed toward the screen.
“Tell me why my signature is on that transfer.”
David glanced at it.
His expression changed for barely half a second.
But I saw it.
Recognition.
Then control returned.
“Dad, this isn’t what it looks like.”
Rebecca laughed once.
Sharp and humorless.
“That seems to be your favorite sentence tonight.”
Martha rushed toward her son.
“Everyone is emotional.”
“No,” Richard said. “Everyone is finally paying attention.”
David looked directly at me.
“You searched my office?”
“Yes.”
“You installed a camera in our bedroom?”
“Yes.”
His voice dropped.
“You humiliated me in front of my family.”
I held his gaze.
“You did that yourself.”
Elena stepped forward.
“David told me you two were basically separated.”
Twenty-two people turned toward her.
I nodded.
“Did he also tell you he kissed me this morning?”
Her face changed.
David closed his eyes briefly.
Interesting.
That hurt her.
For the first time, I realized Elena had her own version of David too.
He had not simply lied to me.
He had built separate realities for everyone.
Richard demanded the original transfer records.
David said they were legitimate.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from someone I had been waiting all evening to hear from.
I looked down.
Three words appeared:
FOUND THE ORIGINAL.
May you like
And attached beneath them was proof that David had forged more than his father’s signature.
He had forged mine too.
