Chapter 2 - THE ENVELOPE DAVID NEVER EXPECTED

Richard crossed the room before Martha could stop him.
“Where did you get that?”
His question silenced everyone faster than the bedroom footage had.
I looked at the envelope.
“David’s desk.”
Martha stared at Richard.
“Why do you know that firm?”
Richard did not answer.
That frightened her more than any answer could have.
Upstairs, the bedroom feed continued silently behind us. David and Elena were talking near the window, completely unaware that the family downstairs had stopped believing in him.
I switched the projector away from the camera.
The screen went black.
Martha exhaled with visible relief.
Then I connected the tablet to a folder I had prepared earlier.
A document appeared.
David Langley Holdings LLC.
Richard whispered something under his breath.
Rebecca stepped closer.
“What is that?”
“I asked myself the same question,” I said.
Three weeks earlier, I had been searching David’s office for our property tax records when I found a receipt from a private document-storage service.
The receipt meant nothing.
Until I noticed David had paid for it using a business account I had never heard of.
That account led me to Langley Holdings.
Martha tried to smile.
“David has investments.”
“He does.”
I changed the page.
Seven property transfers appeared.
Two investment accounts.
One corporate trust.
All created during our marriage.
All controlled solely by David.
“And none of them appear on the financial statements he gave me.”
Richard’s jaw hardened.
Martha looked confused.
“Why would he need to give you financial statements?”
“Because six months ago David asked me to sign a postnuptial agreement.”
Rebecca turned toward Martha.
“You knew about that?”
Martha said nothing.
That was answer enough.
I continued.
“He told me it was estate planning.”
The bedroom door upstairs suddenly opened.
Footsteps sounded faintly above us.
David was coming back.
But before he reached the staircase, Richard looked at the final page on the screen.
Then he turned pale.
Because the largest asset inside David’s secret company had not come from our marriage.
May you like
It belonged to Richard.
And according to the document, Richard had supposedly signed it away eighteen months earlier.
