Chapter 8 - THE COMPANY BUILT ON OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY

Marcus's engineering firm employed eighty-three people.

That was why I didn't enjoy what happened next.

A forensic accountant reviewed the books.

The problem wasn't one dishonest loan.

There were years of irregularities.

Not enough to prove a criminal scheme immediately.

Enough to prove Marcus had repeatedly moved personal and business funds in ways I had never known about.

He had borrowed against our home twice.

Without telling me.

The signatures looked like mine.

They weren't.

I stared at the loan documents.

“Marcus.”

He turned pale.

“I can explain.”

I almost smiled.

“Please find a new sentence.”

He admitted signing my name through a digital authorization he shouldn't have used.

His company needed cash.

He told himself he'd repay it before I noticed.

He did.

But the fraud remained.

Ethan sat silently beside me.

Noah had gone home.

Leo was with Evelyn.

For the first time, this was only our original family again.

And it felt like a funeral.

“What else?” I asked.

Marcus looked at Rachel.

Then me.

“There is one property.”

“What property?”

“A cabin near Breckenridge.”

I frowned.

“We don't own a cabin.”

“I do.”

“How long?”

“Eleven years.”

Of course.

Another hidden life.

The title was held through an LLC.

Marcus claimed he used it for business retreats.

Rachel found the utility records.

Evelyn's name appeared repeatedly.

Photos in old cloud backups showed Leo there.

Birthdays.

Christmas weekends.

A fishing trip.

Marcus smiling beside him.

I had never seen that smile at Ethan's school events.

Ethan scrolled through the pictures.

Then stopped.

One photograph showed Marcus holding a cake.

LEO - 10.

Date stamp:

October 14.

Ethan's birthday.

My son stared at it.

On that same birthday, Marcus told Ethan he couldn't come home because a Denver bridge project had an emergency inspection.

He spent the night with Leo instead.

Ethan put the phone down.

“I remember that birthday.”

Marcus whispered, “I know.”

“No. You don't.”

Ethan's voice stayed calm.

“I waited until midnight because Mom said maybe you'd still come.”

Marcus looked destroyed.

But there was still more.

Rachel searched the LLC that owned the cabin.

Marcus owned only fifty percent.

The other half belonged to Evelyn.

Then she checked the original purchase agreement.

Down payment:

$180,000.

Source account:

Audrey Vance Family Trust.

My inheritance from my father.

I stared at the paper.

Marcus had used my inheritance to buy a secret house with his mistress.
