Chapter 12 - THE CLIMBING ACCIDENT

I didn't think Marcus killed Daniel.

But Leo did.

For exactly twelve seconds.

His face went white.

“Did you hurt him?”

“No.”

Marcus answered instantly.

“No.”

“What happened?”

Marcus had met Daniel at a bar the night before the climbing trip.

Daniel told him he planned to tell his wife and seek legal acknowledgment of Leo.

Evelyn had begged Marcus to stop him.

Marcus tried.

They argued.

Then Daniel left.

The next morning, he went climbing alone.

His anchor failed.

Police called it equipment error.

Case closed.

Marcus had spent fourteen years wondering whether their argument somehow contributed.

But he had never investigated.

Because the truth about Leo might surface.

Another silence purchased with a child.

Leo left the room.

Ethan followed him.

That mattered too.

Two boys who should have resented each other instead walked outside together.

Adults had made them rivals without permission.

They refused the role.

Rachel reopened Daniel's accident through public records.

The equipment report contained an anomaly.

His climbing rope had been cut.

Not frayed.

Cut.

The original detective suspected sabotage.

Then the investigation abruptly stopped.

Why?

A witness changed her statement.

The witness:

Evelyn Carter.

My stomach dropped.

She had told police Daniel recently expressed suicidal thoughts.

The case shifted away from homicide.

Leo confronted her.

“Was it true?”

Evelyn sobbed.

“No.”

“Then why did you say it?”

“Because someone told me to.”

“Who?”

She looked at Marcus.

He went pale.

“I never—”

“Not him,” she whispered.

The person was Walter Reeves.

Daniel's father.

A wealthy developer.

He did not want his son's affair or illegitimate child becoming public.

He pressured Evelyn to keep quiet.

In exchange, he paid her $200,000.

She accepted.

Leo stared at his mother.

“You sold the truth about my father?”

“I was scared.”

“You always say that.”

Then another record surfaced.

Walter Reeves had hired a private investigator the week before Daniel died.

The investigator photographed Daniel meeting Marcus.

Then followed Daniel to the climbing site.

The investigator was still alive.

His name was Carl Webb.

When police contacted him, he agreed to speak.

He admitted Walter paid him to scare Daniel.

Not kill him.

But Carl tampered with Daniel's gear.

He claimed the cut was supposed to be superficial.

It wasn't.

Daniel fell.

Walter paid Carl to disappear.

Daniel's death wasn't an accident.

It wasn't Marcus's fault.

But Marcus had helped hide the circumstances by never challenging Evelyn's false statement.

Leo looked at him.

“You knew Mom lied.”

Marcus nodded.

“And you said nothing.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought protecting you from scandal mattered.”

Leo laughed bitterly.

“Everyone protected me so much I never knew who my father was.”

Then Carl gave investigators one last piece of information.

Daniel had prepared a will before confronting Evelyn.

He named one beneficiary outside his marriage.

His son.

Leo.

May you like

The estate had never paid him.

Because someone had hidden the will.
