Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS WANTED MORE THAN LUCA

They left the church together.

Not as bride and groom.

Not as lovers.

As two people carrying different pieces of the same dangerous truth.

Dante took Valentina to a quiet villa outside Siena owned through one of his legitimate holding companies.

No guards entered the house.

No one took her phone.

No one told her where to sit.

She noticed all of it.

Dante noticed her noticing.

“You’re free to leave.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Valentina looked at him.

“I’m learning.”

That answer seemed to satisfy him.

He placed a file on the dining table.

Celeste Arden.

Real name:

Celeste Vescari.

Her father, Marco Vescari, had once handled financial operations for the Bellinis.

According to Dante, Marco attempted to divert ownership of several properties while Dante’s father was dying.

The conflict ended with lawsuits, frozen accounts, and Marco disappearing from Italy.

“Dead?” Valentina asked.

“No.”

“Where is he?”

“Switzerland, last we confirmed.”

“And Celeste?”

“Educated in London. Worked in corporate advisory. Returned to Italy eight months ago.”

Six months later, she began seeing Luca.

Valentina stared at the photographs again.

“You think she targeted him.”

“I know she did.”

“Then why didn’t you warn him?”

Dante sat across from her.

“I did.”

Valentina looked up.

“He knew?”

“Enough to be cautious.”

“And he kept seeing her.”

“Yes.”

That hurt in a new way.

Luca had not simply stumbled into temptation.

He had chosen it after being warned.

“Why?”

“Because she made him feel important.”

Valentina almost laughed.

Of course.

The oldest trick in the world.

Dante continued.

“Luca has spent his entire life believing I stand between him and the power he deserves.”

“Do you?”

“In some ways.”

At least he was honest.

“Your family trusts you more.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I read documents before signing them.”

That almost made her smile.

Almost.

Then Dante slid another paper toward her.

A preliminary transfer agreement.

Luca had pledged voting rights in one of the Bellini family companies as security for financing.

The lender traced back to a Vescari-linked entity.

Valentina went cold.

“He gave her access to the company?”

“Not yet.”

“But he tried.”

“Yes.”

“Does his father know?”

“No.”

“His mother?”

“No.”

“Anyone?”

“Now you.”

Valentina pushed the document away.

“This has nothing to do with me anymore.”

“It shouldn’t.”

That answer surprised her.

Dante gathered the file.

“You owe Luca nothing.”

“Then why are you showing me this?”

“Because Celeste sent you those photographs.”

Valentina froze.

“What?”

Dante placed a printed metadata report on the table.

The anonymous number that warned Valentina before the ceremony had been routed through a service paid for by Arden Consulting.

Celeste had exposed her own affair.

Valentina stared at him.

“Why would she do that?”

Dante’s voice was low.

“To stop the wedding.”

“Why?”

He looked toward the dark windows.

“Because your marriage contract contained something Luca apparently never told you.”

Valentina’s pulse quickened.

“What?”

Dante turned back.

May you like

“Your family’s vineyard wasn’t going to belong to you after today.”

It was going to become collateral for Luca’s debt.
