Chapter 11 - OUR MOTHERS’ STORY WAS NEVER FINISHED

Lucia met Marco Vescari at the old vineyard house where everything had begun.

Valentina insisted on being present.

So did Celeste.

Dante stayed outside unless invited.

Again.

A boundary.

Marco arrived looking nothing like the villain Valentina imagined.

Sixty-two.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

Tired eyes.

That made him more dangerous, not less.

Monsters are easier when they look like monsters.

Elena Vescari came too.

Celeste’s mother.

The two older women stood facing each other for the first time in twenty-eight years.

Lucia whispered:

“Elena.”

Elena answered:

“You got old.”

Lucia laughed through tears.

“So did you.”

For one strange second, Valentina saw the girls they had been.

Friends.

Partners.

Before husbands and contracts and pride.

Marco ruined it.

“We’re not here for sentiment.”

Celeste turned toward him.

“No. You’re here because your plan failed.”

His expression hardened.

“You have no idea what I built for you.”

“You built debt and called it inheritance.”

That landed.

Valentina almost admired her.

Lucia placed the original vineyard buyout agreement on the table.

“I owe Elena an apology.”

Marco scoffed.

“An apology?”

Lucia ignored him.

“I knew you were desperate.”

Elena’s face changed.

“I knew the land would be worth more.”

Silence.

“I followed the contract because it benefited me.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“I hated you for twenty-eight years.”

“I know.”

“I taught my daughter to hate your family.”

“I know.”

Marco slammed one hand on the table.

“This is pathetic.”

Elena turned.

“No.”

Her voice became cold.

“This is what you were afraid of.”

“What?”

“Us talking.”

There it was.

The deepest secret.

Marco’s power depended on keeping old resentment alive.

If Lucia and Elena reconciled, Celeste no longer needed revenge.

If Valentina knew the truth, she could restructure the trust.

If Luca’s affair ended the marriage, the financial plan collapsed.

Marco had built his return around inherited anger.

Valentina looked at him.

“You wanted everyone angry enough not to compare stories.”

His face told her she was right.

Dante entered only when Lucia asked.

Marco stared at him.

“You think you won?”

Dante replied:

“This isn’t a game.”

“That’s why you’ll lose.”

Then Marco revealed his last card.

He had copies of Bellini financial records showing illegal transactions from years earlier.

Not Dante’s.

His father’s.

Some still tied to active companies.

If released, they could damage legitimate employees, contracts, banks.

Dante remained still.

Valentina watched him.

This was the test.

Reputation versus truth.

Again.

Marco smiled.

“You expose me, I expose your father.”

Dante’s answer came without drama.

“Then expose him.”

Everyone went silent.

Marco’s smile vanished.

Dante continued.

“I won’t build my life around protecting a dead man’s lies.”

Valentina felt something inside her settle.

Love arrived not as heat.

As trust.

Then Celeste’s phone buzzed.

She looked down.

Her face changed.

“What?”

A photograph had arrived.

Luca.

Blood on his shirt.

Sitting against a wall somewhere dark.

Message beneath:

TELL DANTE TO WITHDRAW THE AUDIT.

For the first time, Marco looked genuinely surprised.

May you like

He whispered:

“I didn’t send that.”
