Chapter 12 - SOMEONE ELSE WANTED THE FAMILY WAR TO CONTINUE

The kidnapping changed everything.

Not because Luca was innocent.

He wasn’t.

But guilt does not erase someone’s right to come home alive.

Dante’s first move surprised Valentina.

He called the police.

Immediately.

No private retaliation.

No secret recovery team.

No dramatic promises.

Marco protested.

“You’ll expose everyone.”

Dante looked at him.

“Good.”

Investigators traced the message.

The sender was not Marco.

Not Celeste.

Not Alessandro.

The location data led toward an abandoned olive processing facility outside Florence.

Before police moved, another message came.

This one included a voice recording.

Luca.

Breathing hard.

“I’m okay.”

Then another man’s voice.

“Dante withdraws the audit. Alessandro returns. Everything goes back.”

Valentina recognized the voice before Dante did.

Massimo Rinaldi.

The Bellini family attorney who had reviewed her original marriage contract.

The man who missed the collateral clause.

Or pretended to miss it.

Dante went cold.

“Massimo.”

Everything connected.

Massimo had access to contracts.

Internal security.

Family governance.

He helped Alessandro suppress the affair.

He added clauses to the marriage agreement.

He facilitated financing.

Then when Alessandro fell, Massimo faced exposure.

He needed the old structure restored.

Valentina remembered something.

“Massimo’s signature was on my forged loan documents.”

Dante looked at her.

“Yes.”

Not Luca.

Not Celeste.

Massimo.

The professional quietly standing between every transaction.

The man everyone trusted because he wore no crown.

Police recovered Luca four hours later.

No gunfight.

No heroic charge.

Massimo tried to flee through a service road and was arrested.

Luca suffered a head wound and bruising but was stable.

At the hospital, Valentina stood outside his room.

Dante beside her.

“Do you want to see him?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then don’t decide yet.”

She looked at him.

“You always do that.”

“What?”

“Leave space.”

His expression softened.

“I learned what happens when powerful men don’t.”

Valentina entered eventually.

Luca looked smaller in a hospital bed.

No tuxedo.

No arrogance.

Just a tired man facing consequences.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

She believed him.

That did not mean she wanted him back.

“I know.”

“I loved you badly.”

Her eyes burned.

“Yes.”

“I thought marriage meant you’d stay no matter what I did.”

“Yes.”

He looked away.

“Celeste?”

“Alive.”

“Good.”

Silence.

Then Luca whispered:

“Uncle Dante loves you.”

Valentina’s heart stumbled.

“That’s none of your business.”

A weak smile.

“Probably.”

She turned to leave.

“Valentina.”

She stopped.

“There’s something about Dante you should know.”

She closed her eyes.

Of course there was.

Luca looked at her.

“He was engaged once.”

Valentina turned.

“To who?”

May you like

Luca hesitated.

“Your aunt.”
