Chapter 6 - EVELYN'S BACKUP PLAN

Evelyn refused to come to the house.

So I went to hers.

She opened the door wearing white silk and indignation.

“You’ve already turned my son against me.”

“No, Evelyn.”

I stepped inside.

“Your accounting did that.”

She smiled bitterly.

“You rich girls always think money makes you clever.”

I almost laughed.

“You stole corporate money to buy corporate shares.”

“I protected my family.”

“From whom?”

“You.”

There it was.

For four years, Evelyn had viewed me not as Carter’s wife but as a hostile investor sleeping beside her son.

She believed my $1.5 billion rescue made me dangerous.

My patents made me dangerous.

My trust made me impossible to control.

So she created insurance.

Bennett Strategic.

Sterling Legacy Fund.

Khloe.

Halcyon.

“You gave Khloe patent information?”

“I gave her public research.”

“It wasn’t public.”

Evelyn looked away.

That answer mattered.

Then I noticed a photograph on her desk.

Carter at eighteen.

Beside him stood another young man I had never seen.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Almost the same face.

“Who is that?”

Evelyn moved quickly and turned the frame facedown.

Too late.

“Who?”

“My nephew.”

She lied badly.

I took out my phone and photographed the image.

“Get out.”

“Gladly.”

Marcus identified the man by evening.

Adrian Sterling.

Carter’s older half brother.

I had never heard his name.

Neither had most Sterling executives.

Official records showed Adrian had died eleven years earlier in a climbing accident in Colorado.

But no death certificate existed.

Instead, Marcus found a passport renewal from two years ago.

Adrian was alive.

And he was living in Singapore.

I confronted Carter.

He looked devastated before I finished asking.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you tell me you were an only child?”

“Because to my mother, I am.”

“What does that mean?”

Carter sat down.

Adrian was their father’s son from an earlier relationship.

After Carter’s father died, Evelyn fought over the estate.

Adrian received part of the family investment portfolio.

Evelyn never forgave him.

She raised Carter to believe Adrian stole what belonged to them.

“I haven’t seen him in twelve years.”

“But he’s alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why does this matter now?”

Carter looked at the photograph.

“I don’t know.”

Marcus did.

He called ten minutes later.

Adrian Sterling controlled an investment fund in Singapore.

That fund had quietly purchased nine percent of Sterling Technologies over three years.

Combined with Evelyn’s hidden stake, they controlled more shares than anyone realized.

And according to a confidential agreement Marcus found—

Evelyn and Adrian had been working together.
