Chapter 12 - THE MONEY HIDDEN UNDER MY NAME

For several terrifying hours, it looked as though I had secretly received hundreds of millions from Sterling.
If the paperwork held up, I could become the scandal.
That possibility explained Carter’s first reaction.
“Did you do this?”
I stared at him.
“After everything you’ve learned, you still have to ask?”
He looked ashamed.
“No.”
Good.
Marcus traced the trust.
Created in Nevada.
Three years earlier.
Initial beneficiary: me.
Settlor: North Canyon Research Partners.
Manager: a private fiduciary company.
The $310 million had been invested rather than distributed.
Current value:
$402 million.
I had never touched a dollar.
Then we found the trust protector.
My late father.
Impossible.
He had died five years earlier.
The signature had to be old.
Marcus located the originating documents inside my father’s estate archive.
Suddenly, the mystery changed.
Before he died, my father had negotiated a confidential side protection when my patents were first licensed to Sterling.
If Sterling commercialized certain technology internationally, a percentage of defined licensing revenue would be placed in a separate protective trust for me.
Not Carter.
Not my family office.
Me.
My father had feared exactly what eventually happened:
Marriage and business becoming inseparable.
The $310 million had been legitimate.
Fully documented.
The problem was that neither Carter nor I had been told.
“Why hide it?” I asked Marcus.
“Your father’s note explains.”
He handed me a letter.
Samantha,
If you marry Carter, love him as a husband. Never let yourself become his emergency fund twice.
If Sterling succeeds because of assets you protected, make sure part of that success stays beyond anyone’s reach—including his.
I sat down.
For the first time since the jet, I cried.
Not over Carter.
Over my father.
He had understood the danger of loving someone whose ambition could consume gratitude.
Then Marcus turned the page.
“There’s another condition.”
The trust could not distribute to me while I remained financially entangled with Sterling through marriage.
I stared at him.
“What happens after divorce?”
“The trust becomes fully yours.”
Current value:
$402 million.
Carter looked at the number.
Then at me.
And for the first time, I saw the exact moment he understood something devastating.

He had spent four years trying to gain access to my wealth.
By destroying our marriage, he had just helped unlock even more of it.
