Chapter 11 - THE VOTE THAT COULD END HIS EMPIRE

Adrian expected an immediate yes.

He did not get one.

“You want your brother’s company.”

“I want accountable leadership.”

“You also want his board seat.”

“Both can be true.”

At least he was honest.

I spent the night reviewing everything.

Not as Carter’s wife.

Not as Evelyn’s daughter-in-law.

Not as the woman Khloe displaced from a seat.

As a shareholder responsible for thousands of employees.

By 8:00 a.m., the boardroom was full.

Carter sat at one end.

I sat opposite him.

Evelyn arrived uninvited and was told to wait outside.

That alone nearly caused a scene.

Patricia presented the findings.

Then independent counsel spoke.

Then Nathan.

Then Carter.

He admitted hiding Halcyon discussions.

He admitted failing to disclose Khloe’s conflict.

He admitted approving Bennett Strategic invoices without sufficient review.

He denied knowing about Evelyn’s share-buying scheme.

I believed that part.

He denied authorizing forged documents.

I believed that too.

But negligence from a CEO handling billions was still negligence.

Then Adrian made his motion.

Remove Carter as CEO.

Appoint Adrian interim chief executive.

I almost laughed.

There it was.

The real goal.

Carter looked at me.

“You’re going to help him take Sterling from me?”

“No.”

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

I continued.

“I support removing Carter from the CEO role pending final review.”

Carter flinched.

“But I do not support installing another family member.”

Silence.

I nominated Nathan as interim CEO instead.

Independent.

Experienced.

Already trusted by senior management.

The motion passed.

Carter lost his role.

Adrian lost his attempted takeover.

Evelyn lost both of her preferred outcomes.

And I refused the CEO position before anyone could offer it.

Outside the boardroom, Carter stopped me.

“You took everything.”

“No.”

I looked him straight in the eyes.

“You kept making decisions until there was nothing left for me to protect you from.”

He swallowed.

Then Patricia hurried toward us.

“We found something in the final audit.”

“What now?”

She handed me a report.

The $27.4 million paid to Bennett Strategic was not the largest unexplained transfer.

Three years earlier, Sterling had moved $310 million into a research joint venture.

Carter remembered approving it.

The partner company no longer existed.

But its remaining assets had been transferred to a private trust.

Beneficiary:

Samantha Ashbourne Sterling.

I stared at the page.

May you like

Someone had hidden $310 million in my name.

And I had no idea why.
