Chapter 8 - LILY HAD HEARD THE WHOLE PLAN

Eight hundred thousand dollars had vanished from a six-year-old girl's future.
Suddenly Jessica's international charter made horrifying sense.
They weren't taking a vacation.
They were running.
The investigators separated Mark and me for formal statements.
A child-services caseworker arrived to speak with Lily.
Her name was Tessa Morgan, and unlike everyone else rushing around us, she moved slowly.
She sat on the carpet with Lily.
No desk.
No intimidating questions.
Just crayons, juice, and patience.
Twenty minutes later, Tessa asked to speak with Mark privately.
I started to leave.
“Brooke can stay,” Lily said.
Those three words nearly broke me.
Tessa nodded.
“Lily told me something important.”
Mark sat forward.
“What?”
“She heard adults talking last night.”
Lily hugged her rabbit.
“Mommy thought I was asleep.”
“What did she hear?” I asked.
Tessa let Lily answer.
“Grandpa said Daddy would find the money.”
Mark's face hardened.
“What else?”
“Mommy said Derek had everything ready.”
I looked at Mark.
“And Grandma said once they were gone, you couldn't make them come back.”
The room went very quiet.
I asked, “Did they talk about you?”
Lily nodded.
“Mommy said I couldn't go because Derek doesn't like kids.”
That sentence landed harder than any legal document.
Mark's eyes filled.
He turned away for a second.
Lily continued.
“Grandma said Aunt Brooke would take me.”
I swallowed.
“And Mommy said you already got paid.”
There it was.
The story they had created.
Brooke had received hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Brooke had agreed to become Lily's temporary guardian.
Brooke had taken Lily to Hawaii.
Jessica had supposedly left her daughter with a compensated caregiver.
Then she disappeared.
If things had gone according to plan, by the time I understood what had happened, my entire family would have been outside the country.
And I might have been the one explaining eight hundred thousand dollars in fraudulent withdrawals.
Tessa asked gently, “Did your mother say how long you'd stay with Aunt Brooke?”
Lily nodded again.
“Until Daddy stopped looking.”
Mark closed his eyes.
I couldn't.
I stared at my niece and wondered how adults who claimed to love her could make her listen to something like that.
Then Lily remembered one more thing.
“Mommy had two phones.”
Mark looked sharply at Tessa.
“Two?”
“She put one in Grandma's purse.”
“Do you know what it looked like?”
“A black one.”
Lily thought.
“It had a cracked corner.”
I knew that phone.
Jessica had told us she'd lost it almost a year earlier.
Mark's attorney immediately requested that investigators include it in any evidence search.
Why would Jessica carry an old hidden phone?
The answer arrived less than an hour later.
A digital-security specialist working with Mark's attorney located backups linked to Jessica's old cloud account.
Photos.
Messages.
Scanned documents.
Then a group conversation.
The title made my stomach drop.
PLAN B.
Participants:
Jessica.
Mom.
Dad.
And Derek.
The first recovered message was from my mother.
Brooke will complain, but she'll take Lily. She always cleans up our messes.
Then Jessica had replied:
Good. Once she's in Hawaii, everything points to her anyway.
But the final message from my father was the one nobody understood.
Make sure Brooke never sees the Bennett audit letter.
Mark stared at the screen.
“What audit letter?”
His attorney searched her records.
Then she found it.
An outside forensic audit had been scheduled before anyone knew Lily would be abandoned.
It was due to begin Monday morning.
Someone had discovered irregularities in the trust.
May you like
Jessica hadn't been running because Mark had found the missing money.
She had been running because she knew he was about to.
