Chapter 13 - JESSICA FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH

Jessica broke first.

Not because she suddenly became remorseful.

Because she learned Derek had disappeared.

Investigators told her that his seat on the Cayman charter had been canceled.

They also told her several offshore accounts were being frozen.

Then they showed her evidence that Derek had been communicating with another woman.

Apparently another wealthy divorcee.

Jessica asked for an attorney.

After that, her story changed.

By evening, she wanted to cooperate.

I didn't feel sorry for her.

Maybe someday I would.

That day, all I could see was Lily sitting alone beneath an airport departure screen.

Jessica admitted the abandonment plan had been discussed for three weeks.

Mom had suggested me.

Dad had created the paperwork.

Jessica had booked Lily's ticket through my airline account.

She claimed she believed I would complain for “an hour or two” and then take Lily to Maui.

“What if Brooke called Mark?” an investigator asked.

Jessica's answer was devastating.

“She usually avoids conflict.”

That was my role in the family.

Not daughter.

Not sister.

Not person.

Shock absorber.

Jessica also admitted that she had emptied Lily's bedroom.

She said the boxes were supposed to make it easier for me to “transition” Lily into my apartment later.

Later.

Not ten days.

The temporary guardianship form said fourteen days because Dad believed anything longer might draw attention.

But Jessica admitted she had no specific date to return from Cayman.

She had been willing to leave Lily indefinitely.

When Mark learned that, he didn't say anything.

He simply walked outside the interview area.

I found him ten minutes later by a window.

“You okay?”

“No.”

It was the first completely honest answer I'd heard all day.

“I'm angry enough to hate her,” he said. “But Lily still loves her.”

“That doesn't mean you have to protect Jessica from consequences.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“I just need to protect Lily from thinking any of this happened because she wasn't worth staying for.”

My eyes burned.

Because I knew that fear.

Different circumstances.

Same wound.

Being the person your family expects to absorb everything eventually makes you wonder whether your needs matter at all.

That evening, Jessica's cooperation revealed where Derek had gone.

Not Cayman.

Miami.

He had planned to fly internationally the next morning under another identity connected to one of his companies.

Federal agents moved quickly.

But before they reached him, Derek made one final mistake.

He logged into an encrypted storage account from a hotel network.

Investigators obtained records connecting him to the larger financial scheme.

And inside those files was a folder titled CARTER.

It contained every forged invoice.

Every trust statement.

Every message with Dad.

And several audio recordings.

On one recording, my father's voice said clearly:

“If this blows up, Brooke takes the fall. She's clean. That's why people will believe the paperwork.”

For twenty-four hours, I had wondered whether some part of Dad had hesitated.

That recording answered me.

He hadn't.
