Chapter 11 - MY FATHER BUILT THE TRAP

Dad had known Derek first.
That revelation destroyed the last excuse anyone could make for him.
This wasn't a father helping his daughter after she fell for the wrong man.
He had brought the wrong man into her life.
Investigators began examining Dad's former accounting practice.
Within hours, they found connections.
Derek had appeared on client correspondence years earlier under different consulting companies.
Always near wealthy families.
Always near trusts.
Always near complicated divorces.
Dad had processed paperwork for some of them.
Mark's attorney looked grim when she called.
“Your father may have been facilitating financial fraud long before Lily's account.”
I sat alone near the terminal window.
Outside, planes taxied beneath the afternoon sun.
Hours earlier, I had been furious that one of those planes would leave without me.
Now Maui felt like another universe.
Mom had raised me to believe Dad was the safest person in every room.
He taught me how to ride a bike.
He came to my college graduation.
He bought me my first professional portfolio case.
And somewhere along the way, apparently, money had become more important than all of us.
My phone vibrated.
A text from an unknown number.
BROOKE. PLEASE DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING MARK TELLS YOU.
Mom.
She must have been allowed temporary access to another phone during questioning or had borrowed someone's.
I showed the investigator.
Another message arrived.
YOUR FATHER MADE MISTAKES BUT HE LOVES THIS FAMILY.
Then:
JESSICA WAS PANICKING. WE WERE TRYING TO HELP HER.
I finally replied.
YOU LEFT LILY ALONE IN AN AIRPORT.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Returned.
Then Mom sent:
SHE WAS NEVER ALONE. YOU WERE THERE.
I stared at those words.
That was how they thought.
If I was within fifty yards, their responsibility disappeared.
My career.
My vacation.
My money.
My consent.
None of it mattered because Brooke would handle it.
She always did.
Until today.
I blocked the number.
That evening, Mark received emergency temporary custody.
Lily would go home with him.
Child services asked me whether I felt comfortable being listed as an approved relative contact.
“Yes.”
Lily heard me.
She smiled for the first time all day.
Then Mark's attorney arrived in person carrying a folder.
“We found the complete PLAN B chat.”
She placed it on the table.
Most of it confirmed what we already knew.
Mom discussed my flight.
Jessica discussed Lily's suitcase.
Dad discussed forging business documentation.
But one message made my hands shake.
It had been sent by Mom two weeks earlier.
What if Brooke refuses to take her?
Dad answered:
She won't. Tell her Lily will go into foster care if she walks away. Brooke's guilt will do the rest.
My parents had known exactly how to control me.
Then I read Jessica's response.
And if she calls Mark?
Dad replied:
She won't.
Jessica:
How can you be sure?
Dad:
Because Brooke still thinks Mark was the one who ruined your marriage.
I looked up.
Mark was watching me.
“What?”
I swallowed.
“Jessica told us you cheated.”
His expression changed.
“She told you what?”
“She said that's why you divorced.”
Mark gave one bitter laugh.
Then he opened an email on his phone.
The divorce petition.
The original one.
Filed by him.
Reason cited:
Financial misconduct and concealment of marital assets.

There had never been another woman.
Jessica had invented the affair so none of us would ask what Mark had actually discovered.
