Chapter 8 - The Blue Box Beneath the Floor

The red-door house had been empty for years.
At least, that was what Silas believed.
But when investigators searched the property, they discovered signs of recent activity.
Fresh tire tracks.
Food packaging.
And footprints leading toward the rear entrance.
Silas wasn't permitted to enter during the initial search.
He waited outside with Marcus while Khloe remained with Noah at a nearby secure location.
The little boy was drawing quietly.
Every few minutes, he looked toward the door.
Then signed:
DADDY COMING?
Khloe smiled.
YES. DADDY WILL COME BACK.
Noah nodded.
Then returned to his drawing.
For the first time, he seemed willing to believe an adult's promise.
At the house, investigators removed a loose floorboard beneath an old wardrobe.
Underneath lay a blue metal box.
Inside were financial records, photographs, and several sealed envelopes.
One document carried Antonio Costello's signature.
Another contained an affidavit prepared shortly before his death.
Silas stared at the photographs investigators later showed him.
His father had been investigating Victor Sterling.
Not just for financial theft.
For secretly transferring Costello family assets into shell companies controlled by an outside syndicate.
Silas felt sick.
Antonio had discovered the fraud and planned to expose it.
Then he'd died unexpectedly.
The medical examiner had attributed his death to heart failure.
Now the records suggested someone had interfered with his medication.
But the most devastating document concerned Elena.
A handwritten letter.
Silas, if you're reading this, I couldn't protect your father.
Victor has threatened Noah.
He told me he'll kill both of you unless I disappear.
Silas gripped the page.
The letter continued.
I couldn't tell you because he controlled the people around us.
Please don't believe I left because I stopped loving you.
His vision blurred.
For two years, he'd believed his wife was gone.
He'd buried his grief beneath work, fear, and control.
Now he understood that Elena had spent those years fighting to keep him alive.
Then Marcus brought him another document.
A medical report.
It showed Elena had been treated at the North Harbor facility only four days earlier.
Silas looked up.
"She's there."
Marcus nodded.
"Authorities are coordinating a search."
Silas turned toward the lake.
For the first time in years, he prayed.
Not for power.
Not for revenge.
Just for the chance to see his wife again.
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID showed Victor Sterling.
Silas answered.
Victor's voice was calm.
"You found the box."
Silas gripped the phone.
"Where is Elena?"
Victor laughed softly.
"You really should've stayed on that plane."
Silas closed his eyes.
Then Victor spoke the words that changed everything.
"Your wife isn't the only prisoner at North Harbor."
May you like
And before Silas could respond, Victor added:
"Your brother is still alive."
