Chapter 13 - The Promise Between Two Fathers

Khloe had spent fifteen years believing her father died without knowing whether his work mattered.

Now Elena Costello was telling her that Michael Gallagher had saved her life.

They met inside a secure medical facility two days later.

Elena sat beside a window, wrapped in a cream-colored blanket.

She looked fragile.

Exhausted.

But alive.

Silas stopped in the doorway.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Elena stood.

"Silas."

His face crumpled.

He crossed the room and pulled her into his arms.

They held each other for what seemed like an eternity.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Elena shook her head.

"You didn't know."

"I should've found you."

"You couldn't."

Tears streamed down both their faces.

Then Elena pulled back.

"Where's Noah?"

"Safe."

Her hands began trembling.

"Is he okay?"

Silas nodded.

"He's with his specialist. He's learning to communicate with me."

Elena covered her mouth.

"You learned sign language?"

Silas smiled through tears.

"I'm trying."

She began crying again.

Then Khloe stepped forward.

Elena looked at her.

"Khloe Gallagher."

Khloe nodded.

"Yes."

Elena reached for her hand.

"Your father was a good man."

Khloe's eyes filled.

"He died trying to stop Victor."

Elena nodded.

"But before he died, he gave me something."

She opened a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Michael Gallagher stood beside Antonio Costello.

Both men were smiling.

Behind them, a younger Elena held a baby.

Noah.

Khloe stared.

"My father knew Noah?"

Elena nodded.

"He helped us protect evidence after Noah was born."

Khloe swallowed.

"Why didn't he tell me?"

"Because Victor had threatened his family."

Elena looked down.

"Your father wanted to make sure you grew up safely."

She handed Khloe another letter.

It was written in Michael Gallagher's familiar handwriting.

Khloe, if you ever meet Silas Costello, remember that he is not responsible for his father's world.

He was raised inside it, but he still has a choice about the man he becomes.

Khloe's tears fell onto the paper.

Elena continued.

"Your father believed Silas could change the company from within."

Silas looked stunned.

"Michael Gallagher said that?"

Elena nodded.

"He told Antonio that someday you might be the one to stop Victor."

Silas lowered his head.

For years, he'd believed the only way to survive was to become harder than everyone around him.

Now he was discovering that two men he'd barely understood had once believed he could become something better.

Then Elena looked toward Khloe.

"There's one more thing."

Khloe raised her eyes.

"Your father left instructions for the day Noah could finally tell his story."

Khloe frowned.

"What instructions?"

Elena's expression softened.

"He wanted the person who understood Noah to help us finish what he started."

May you like

Then she whispered:

"And Noah has one final secret he hasn't told anyone."
