Chapter 14 - The Last Secret Noah Kept

Noah Costello had been trying to protect his family with the only language he knew.
Now, sitting beside his mother and father for the first time in two years, he finally had adults willing to listen.
Khloe sat across from him.
Elena was beside Silas.
Noah looked at his mother.
His tiny hands trembled.
Then he signed:
MOMMY.
Elena began crying.
She signed back.
MY BABY.
Noah climbed into her lap.
For several minutes, they simply held each other.
Silas watched, tears running down his face.
Then Noah looked at him.
DADDY.
Silas smiled.
He signed slowly.
I AM HERE.
Noah's face brightened.
Then he looked at Khloe.
His expression changed.
She signed gently.
DO YOU WANT TO TELL US SOMETHING?
Noah nodded.
He reached into the pocket of his small jacket.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
Khloe stared.
"What's that?"
Noah unfolded it carefully.
It was a drawing.
A warehouse.
A truck.
A man standing beside a red door.
And a little boy hiding behind a stack of boxes.
Noah pointed at the man.
Then signed:
VICTOR.
Khloe nodded.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Noah looked toward his father.
Then signed slowly.
VICTOR SAID HE WOULD MAKE DADDY GO AWAY.
Silas closed his eyes.
Noah continued.
I HID.
WHERE?
Noah pointed toward the drawing.
BEHIND BOXES.
Khloe leaned closer.
WHAT DID YOU SEE?
The boy hesitated.
Then signed:
VICTOR GAVE PAPERS TO MAN.
Silas frowned.
"What man?"
Khloe asked Noah.
The child drew another figure.
A tall man wearing glasses.
He added a small symbol on the man's jacket.
A blue shield.
Marcus looked at the drawing.
His expression changed.
"Boss, that's the insignia of a private security company."
Silas studied it.
"Which one?"
Marcus swallowed.
"Sterling Protection Services."
Victor's company.
But the man in the drawing wasn't Victor.
He was someone else.
Someone Noah had seen repeatedly.
Khloe asked another question.
DO YOU KNOW HIS NAME?
Noah nodded.
Then carefully fingerspelled:
R-O-B-E-R-T.
Marcus went pale.
Silas noticed.
"Who is Robert?"
Marcus looked toward the investigator.
"Robert Sterling. Victor's younger brother."
Silas stared.
"I thought Robert died five years ago."
Marcus shook his head.
"Apparently not."
The room went silent.
Noah continued signing.
Khloe watched.
Her expression changed.
"What is it?" Silas asked.
She swallowed.
"Noah says Robert was the one who told Victor what to do."
Silas went still.
For years, he'd believed Victor was the mastermind.
But Robert had apparently been directing operations from the shadows.
The investigators immediately began tracing Robert Sterling's movements.
Within hours, they located financial transactions connecting him to the offshore companies.
But the most shocking discovery came from the original succession documents.
Robert wasn't simply Victor's brother.
He had secretly acquired control of the trust overseeing several Costello family properties.
And the only person who could legally challenge that control was Noah.
Silas stared at the document.
May you like
Then looked toward his son.
The boy had been the target all along.
