Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN IN THE SHADOWS

:
Three days later, the truth finally surfaced.
Julian's helicopter hadn't crashed.
It had landed at a private airfield in Vermont.
Margaret was captured.
Julian disappeared.
And the unknown woman remained.
Her name was Nora Bell.
She had spent twenty-five years inside the Croft organization.
Nobody knew she existed.
Not even Margaret.
She had built a hidden network beneath all three families.
When I met her, she was sitting in a quiet conference room with a cup of tea.
She looked ordinary.
That terrified me more than any armed man.
“You've been watching me,” I said.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father asked me to.”
I stared.
“My father?”
Nora nodded.
“He knew the families would destroy themselves.”
“So he created another family?”
“No.”
She smiled.
“A way out.”
She handed me a folder.
Inside were documents proving the Harbor Covenant had a final clause.
No individual heir could own the trust.
Not Elena.
Not Silas.
Not the twins.
The assets had to be dissolved.
Every dollar.
Every company.
Every port.
Every hidden account.
Everything had to be given away.
“To who?”
“Victims.”
I looked up.
“Victims of the families.”
Nora nodded.
“Your father's final act was an attempt at redemption.”
I looked at Silas.
He read the documents.
His face softened.
“My father wanted the same thing.”
“No,” Nora said.
“Your father wanted power.”
She looked at me.
“Your father wanted forgiveness.”
My chest tightened.
The families had spent generations collecting money while destroying lives.
Now the final heirs could end it.
But one question remained.
“Where is Julian?”
Nora looked at the window.
“Alive.”
I felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
“Why hasn't he been arrested?”
“Because he has one final card.”
“What?”
She handed me a photograph.
A hospital nursery.
A newborn.
Not my daughters.
Another baby.
With the same crescent-shaped birthmark.
I stared.
“No.”
Nora nodded.
“There was a third child.”
My mother covered her mouth.
My father whispered:
“Impossible.”
Nora looked at me.
“Julian knew about the third child before you gave birth.”
“Where?”
She said:
“Croft private hospital.”
I felt cold.
“That child…”
“Is biologically yours.”
My knees almost gave out.
“How?”
Nora looked at Silas.
“You need to ask him.”
I turned.
Silas's expression was devastated.
“I didn't know.”
“Who is the father?”
Silas didn't answer.
Nora did.
“Silas.”
The room went silent.
Another child.
Another secret.
Another bloodline.
But this time, Silas looked at me with something worse than fear.
Grief.
“I was told the pregnancy didn't take,” he whispered.
I stared.
“When?”
“Before you married Julian.”
My mind raced.
The fertility treatment.
The strange paperwork.
The doctor Julian insisted on choosing.
The weeks he kept me isolated.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Julian hadn't wanted a son.
He had wanted control over every child connected to the Covenant.
Then Nora said:
“The third child is now four years old.”
I looked at her.
Four.
My heart stopped.
She continued:
“And Julian has been raising him.”
I couldn't breathe.
Another child.
My child.
Alive somewhere in the Croft empire.
And Julian had hidden him for four years.
Silas reached for my hand.
I took it.
“We're bringing him home.”
Nora nodded.
But before we could leave, my mother's phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed.
“What?”
She looked at me.
“Julian knows we're coming.”
Then a voice came through the speaker.
A child's voice.
Small.
Frightened.
“Mommy?”
My heart shattered.
“Who is this?”
Silence.
Then:
May you like
“Please come get me.”
The line went dead.
