Chapter 1 - THE MAN BEHIND THE DOOR

:

The three knocks came again.

Slow.

Heavy.

Deliberate.

My entire body went rigid.

I clutched the silk blanket around myself while my newborn daughters slept in the transparent bassinet beside the bed.

Silas Mercer stood between me and the door.

He didn't move.

He didn't even blink.

Kaelen was already reaching beneath his jacket.

“Boss,” he murmured, “there are six men in the corridor.”

Silas glanced at me.

“Julian?”

Kaelen shook his head.

“No identification yet.”

Another knock.

This time, a man's voice came through the reinforced steel.

“Elena.”

My heart stopped.

Julian.

He sounded calm.

Almost tender.

“Open the door, sweetheart.”

I felt sick.

“He knows I'm alive.”

Silas didn't look away from the door.

“How?”

“I don't know.”

Julian laughed softly from the other side.

“I know you're listening.”

Silas raised one finger.

Every man in the room froze.

Then he walked toward the door.

“You have thirty seconds to tell me why you're here,” Silas said.

Julian answered immediately.

“I came for my wife.”

I swallowed.

Silas turned his head toward me.

“Do you want him alive?”

The question surprised me.

I stared at the man who had carried my freezing body through the snow.

“No.”

My voice was barely audible.

“But I don't want him to touch my girls.”

Silas nodded.

“That is all I needed to hear.”

He opened a narrow security panel beside the door.

A camera feed appeared.

Julian stood in the hallway wearing an expensive black overcoat.

Behind him were five armed men.

But one face among them made my stomach twist.

Marcus Vail.

My husband's attorney.

He had been present at my delivery.

He had stood beside Julian when my daughters were born.

He had watched Julian call them curses.

And now he was carrying a black leather briefcase.

“What is that?” I whispered.

Kaelen zoomed in.

“The briefcase?”

I nodded.

“That's the Croft family seal.”

Silas's expression changed.

“Interesting.”

He opened another screen.

“This apartment is owned by a Mercer shell company,” he said quietly. “No one outside my organization should know this address.”

I looked at him.

“Then someone inside your organization told Julian.”

Silas's eyes hardened.

“Yes.”

The realization hit me.

This wasn't just Julian coming for me.

Someone had betrayed Silas.

A betrayal inside the Mercer family meant something far more dangerous than an angry husband.

It meant war.

Julian's voice came through the speaker again.

“Elena, I don't want a fight.”

I almost laughed.

“You threw me into the street.”

Silence.

Then Julian said something that made every hair on my body rise.

“I didn't throw you out because of the girls.”

I stared at the door.

“What?”

“I threw you out because your father left you something.”

My lungs stopped.

My father.

A man Julian told me had died penniless before I met him.

A man whose name had never appeared in any Croft financial record.

A man I had spent twenty-eight years believing had abandoned our family.

Silas looked at me.

“Is he lying?”

“I don't know.”

Julian laughed.

“He never told you the truth, did he?”

Silas's jaw tightened.

“What truth?”

Julian leaned closer to the security camera.

“The Ross family isn't dead.”

My heart pounded.

“It's waiting.”

Then Marcus lifted the black briefcase.

Julian continued:

“And inside this case is the one thing your father was willing to kill an entire dynasty to protect.”

Silas reached for the lock.

I grabbed his wrist.

“Don't.”

He looked at me.

“Why?”

“Because if Julian came here knowing about my father…”

I looked at my sleeping daughters.

“…then someone has been looking for us long before tonight.”

Silas studied my face.

Then he lowered his hand.

“Good.”

His voice became colder.

“Because now I know this isn't just my war.”

He turned toward the door.

“It's yours.”

May you like

And as the storm battered the glass outside, I realized the man I feared most might not be Julian.

It might be the family I had never known.
