Chapter 5 - THE CHILDREN VANISH

:

I don't remember screaming.

I only remember the empty bassinets.

The blankets were still warm.

The room smelled like milk and lavender.

But my daughters were gone.

Silas moved faster than anyone I had ever seen.

“Lock down the building.”

Every door slammed shut.

“Elevators?”

“Frozen.”

“Stairwells?”

“Sealed.”

“Cameras?”

“Being pulled now.”

Kaelen ran toward the security room.

My mother grabbed my shoulders.

“Elena, listen to me.”

I pushed her away.

“They took my babies.”

“We'll get them back.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

“Your grandmother.”

I stared.

“I don't have a grandmother.”

“Yes, you do.”

My mother's expression was broken.

“The woman who created the Harbor Covenant.”

Silas turned.

“Where is she?”

My mother looked at him.

“Under the old Boston harbor.”

The words made no sense.

“She built an underground estate there.”

“Why?”

“To survive.”

Silas's phone rang.

He answered.

A woman's voice came through.

Old.

Calm.

“Silas Mercer.”

Silas's face hardened.

“Who are you?”

“You know exactly who I am.”

My mother whispered:

“Margaret Ross.”

The woman laughed.

“Hello, daughter.”

I froze.

My grandmother.

She continued.

“Bring Elena.”

Silas asked:

“What do you want?”

“Only what belongs to me.”

“The girls?”

“No.”

She paused.

“Elena.”

My stomach turned.

“Me?”

“You're the final key.”

The call ended.

Silas looked at my mother.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

He stepped toward her.

“Why didn't you tell us?”

“Because Margaret has spent thirty years trying to get her daughter back.”

I stared.

“My grandmother wants me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

My mother looked away.

“Because the Harbor Covenant was never a trust.”

My throat tightened.

“What was it?”

“A genetic command system.”

I didn't understand.

My mother explained that my grandfather had created a network of financial accounts, corporate ownership structures and political protections that could only be activated by my blood.

The girls were part of it.

But I was the master key.

Margaret wanted me because she believed she could use my bloodline to resurrect the family empire.

Silas looked at me.

“Then we're going under the harbor.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“This is my family.”

“And those are my daughters.”

He stepped closer.

“Then we're going together.”

My mother grabbed his arm.

“If you go, she will use your presence against Elena.”

Silas didn't move.

“What do you suggest?”

My mother looked at me.

“We let her think she has won.”

I understood.

A trap.

We would go.

But we would control the terms.

Three hours later, we arrived beneath Boston Harbor.

The old tunnel was hidden behind a collapsed maintenance station.

Silas walked beside me.

“Stay behind me.”

“I won't.”

He almost smiled.

“You're stubborn.”

“They're my children.”

“I know.”

We reached a massive steel door.

It opened before we touched it.

Warm golden light spilled into the tunnel.

At the far end stood an elderly woman in a black dress.

Margaret Ross.

She looked at me.

Then smiled.

“Finally.”

Beside her were my daughters.

Alive.

Sleeping.

Unharmed.

I took a step forward.

Margaret raised one hand.

“Not yet.”

Then someone walked out from behind her.

Julian.

Alive.

My heart stopped.

He smiled.

“You really should stop believing what you see on television, Elena.”

Silas drew his weapon.

Julian laughed.

“Don't.”

He pointed toward the babies.

“They aren't the real leverage.”

He looked at me.

“You are.”

Margaret placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Welcome home, granddaughter.”

May you like

Then she whispered:

“Your real father is waiting downstairs.”
