Chapter 13 - THE STAIRS WHERE EVERYTHING BROKE

Clare never intended to return to the Ashcroft estate.

Not after the threats.

Not after the forged medical request.

Not after discovering how long the family had been watching her.

But the following evening, Eleanor called in tears.

“Clare, please. Douglas has locked himself in the study. He's threatening to destroy Margaret's original documents.”

Clare hesitated.

Nathaniel was attending an emergency board meeting.

The attorney was unavailable for another hour.

She should have waited.

She knew that later.

But the thought of her mother's final evidence disappearing made her desperate.

She drove to the estate.

Eleanor met her at the front entrance.

Her face was pale.

“Thank you for coming.”

Clare stepped inside.

“Where are the documents?”

“Upstairs.”

They walked toward the grand staircase.

At the landing stood Douglas Ashcroft.

Beside him was Victoria Bowmont.

Harrison Bowmont waited near the study.

Clare stopped.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Douglas looked at her.

“Miss Whitmore.”

Clare stepped backward.

“Where are my mother's files?”

Victoria smiled.

“Always asking questions.”

Clare turned toward Eleanor.

“You lied to me.”

Eleanor looked away.

Her silence answered.

Douglas approached.

“Clare, you're going to sign a statement.”

She stared at him.

“What statement?”

“That the Meridian allegations were based on misunderstandings.”

“No.”

Victoria's smile disappeared.

“You really don't understand how much trouble you're causing.”

Clare took another step toward the stairs.

“I'm leaving.”

Harrison moved toward the doorway.

Douglas's voice hardened.

“Not until you sign.”

Clare reached for her phone.

Victoria grabbed her wrist.

“Put that away.”

“Let go.”

Victoria tightened her grip.

Clare tried to pull free.

Then Eleanor spoke.

“Victoria, enough.”

But Victoria was furious now.

“You've ruined everything!”

She shoved Clare.

Hard.

Clare stumbled backward.

Her heel caught the edge of the marble stair.

For one terrible second, she lost her balance.

Her hands flew toward her stomach.

Then she fell.

The first impact stole her breath.

The second sent pain through her back.

The third made the world flash white.

She heard someone scream.

Then another voice.

Nathaniel.

“CLARE!”

He was running toward her.

He'd arrived earlier than expected after Eleanor's driver sent an emergency warning to his security chief.

Nathaniel reached her at the bottom of the stairs.

He dropped to his knees.

Blood stained the marble beneath her.

His hands shook.

“Clare. Look at me.”

She opened her eyes.

“Baby…”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“Please…”

Nathaniel looked toward the landing.

His mother.

His father.

Victoria.

All standing frozen.

Then his expression changed.

“If she loses that baby,” he said, his voice frighteningly calm, “none of you walk away from what you've done.”

He pulled out his phone.

“Call an ambulance. Now.”

Douglas stepped forward.

“Nathaniel, we can handle this privately.”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“No.”

Then he spoke the words that ended the Ashcroft dynasty as it had always existed.

“I'm calling the police.”

Clare reached weakly for his hand.

“Nathaniel…”

He bent closer.

“I'm here.”

Her lips trembled.

“I can't feel…”

His heart stopped.

“What?”

She began crying.

May you like

“I can't feel the baby moving.”

And in that moment, Nathaniel Ashcroft understood that all the money his family possessed couldn't buy back a single heartbeat.
